I think you'll have to get the 000948-chmsl-HW too which has the sealant and the tool

Can you confirm that they'll ship you the parts? I've tried ordering from dealers in the past and they've always cancelled the order claiming it's a free recall and to bring the truck in. What they mean is they want to get overpaid by Toyota for the "fix."

So I got the letter and information about how to submit for reimbursement. I go through the steps, upload the documents and then it errors out - twice. Maybe temporary, but seems like maybe they don't want to reimburse anyone. Anyone have any luck?

Oh, and just as proof of their incompetence, the phone number they give me on their error page is for Lexus. D'oh!

After months of procrastinating and having my replacement oem third brake light sitting in a box I ordered and installed another third brake light from @tacomalifestyle thinking it would be an upgrade and a complete fix. While it's smoked, LED, and has a neat flash/pulse feature it's definitely not waterproof. Also, the mounting studs are shorter and the nuts are 8mm vs the 10mm oem, which makes installation more complicated that it should be.

So yesterday I ordered the trim gasket and silicone kit through Fred Haas Toyota on Walmart of all places. (Only place that would sell me the parts.) About $96 for the 2 tsb parts, and roughly $80 a piece for the oem brake light and @tacomalifestyle third brake light or $256 total. :spending:

I guess I'll find out about reimbursement when I contact Toyota next week. If I can get reimbursed for the $96 tsb parts or $80 oem light I'll be happy. Otherwise, I figure my time is worth more than dealing with the local Toyota service department. (Incompetent Buffoons)

If anything, perhaps @tacomalifestyle can take this as feedback to improve their light gasket or offer their customers a tube of silicone. :boink:

I'll update when I get the rest of the parts. Attached is a few pictures showing oem vs the installed @tacomalifestyle third brake light.

I replaced my light with a
Curious if you ordered that OEM light from Toyota or that ebay guy. I'm assuming the ebay guy because of the $80 price tag. I really just wanted to know what one looked like directly from Toyota. I did mine this weekend and even though mine showed up for the recall, I'm pretty sure it was the same thing already on my truck. Mine was not leaking on my 2019 TRD Sport. The date codes were only 4 months (12-18 to 4-19) apart too FWIW.

Are you sending the light back to Tacomalifestyle? There does look to be a better gasket on Ebay, more OEM although it only has adhesive on one side. They advertise it as being a benefit, to be able to remove the light to change bulbs but the OEM light has LEDs and the older ones (pre '16) have screws holding the lens in so I don't think it would be a benefit at all for our trucks in any year that it may fit.

Also, please update if you get any reimbursement from Toyota. I kind of thought they wouldn't for me since mine came from Ebay, even though it SHOULD be new OEM.

If anybody has a picture of a light recently ordered from Toyota, please share a photo, specifically of the gasket, if you could. Thanks in advance.

Tried to submit for reimbursement for the 3rd day in a row, and I continue to get the error message. I'm starting to think it's intentional. More hoops means fewer requests.

Toyota light is from eBay. It's identical to the oem one I removed and I tested it and it works fine. I sent a message to @tacomalifestyle last night with my concerns about not being waterproof. I'm waiting to hear back. Not sure which one I'll keep on the truck as I really like the brighter led's of the tacomalifestyle one. Going to test tsb gasket fitment when parts arrive to see which is best.

Did you notice anything different from the one you bought of Ebay (I bought the same one) and the one you removed from your truck?

    No, exactly the same part.

edit: You can pay $150 and order one directly from Toyota or save half for gas or something else. ;)

Yeah so I assume yours wasn't leaking either so I wonder what exactly the failure point is. I thought since the part # was different the gasket was different. Starting to think they changed something with those stud mounts and not the gasket.

Mine was leaking very slightly. The old gasket had completely dissolved. It's the same part (light) Toyota just made the gasket thicker and gave it a new part number. Thumb pack a few pages and you'll find some pictures and more info.

Post 412? I've looked through this whole thread and I can't get a good picture of the old one or what a new factory one looks like (with the new part #). Some people call the bezel a "thicker gasket" That guy in post 412 is what I'm concerned about. Same problem reoccurring down the road.

I found mine through a Toyota dealer for $103 with free shipping and no tax. It has the thicker gasket compared to the very thin one on my original light.

For those not yet leaking, you might want to remove the light anyway and at least replace the gasket. One reason they are leaking is because the nut was over torqued and cracked the cheap plastic retainer on the light. That causes it to be loose and the gasket slowly separates over time. If you remove yours and find the cracked bolt housing you can replace the light or epoxy the bolt in place. If it's fine you have piece of mind and can at least upgrade the gasket. If cracked and Toyota just puts that bezel on it's still cracked and no way to know what sort of issue that could cause down the road.

Quoting myself to add new info for anyone having this issue. After multiple attempts and 3 phone calls to Toyota I was finally given an email address to send the documents to. That email is reimbrusementrequest@toyota.com. At least I hope that's right one. The first email they gave me was wrong. I'll update if I have any new info.
