I just finished up installing the Yakima Overhaul HD system on on 21’ DCLB. This rack was appealing to me as I have a ton of Yakima accessories and I liked the idea of the adjustable height

I’m frequently hauling motorcycles in the bed. I’m wondering :

    1. if anyone has run this rack with the rear crossbar removed? It would be quicker to load and unload the bike for a whole day rather than removing/ replacing the bar to and from the events

    2. if you have, have you done it with any weight on the sidebars? (I.e a two gallon rotopax)

    3. used any electrical or other grease in the lock tumblers? I find it an odd design that the key holes face up

    thanks!

I've got the overhaul setup and would think that it would be quicker to remove the bike for a whole day. Replacing the bar can get pretty old fast.

I'll personally be hauling mountain bikes and plan on setting the bars high enough for some clearance. But I'll also have a RTT mounted so I wont' be adjusting too much.

I tried it out this weekend - you're right on the bar. But I did determine that my trials bike just fits under the bar at it's highest setting - so I can loosen the bolts and raise it quickly enough. When I take the big bike, which is less often, I'll have to remove the bar (removing the rack would be more of a pain since I have the sidebars on it so I'd either have to remove those, or take the whole rack off as a unit)

Ahh thats awesome. Yeah I've got sidebars as well. Been waiting to purchase some rotopax and grips for a shovel mount.

I have a Rotopax on the way, the Yakima adaptor arrived last week.

Also, I went with the "Short" version of the sidebars even with the Tacoma Long Bed - they give a lot more options than the longer ones, since their shortest length is already pretty long. The short ones go end to end without being quite fully extended

I'm so glad I read this post. This is what I was thinking and hoping (regarding the side rails). I wanted the ability to go further apart, but the options on the long aren't very appealing for a 6' bed. Yet I didn't want to go "short" so hearing you confirm what I was thinking/hoping once I read the dimensions pretty well sorted that out for me.

Any other advice you may have after running the system for a while? I just got mine 2 days ago and mounted it last night on my Retrax XR (2014 access cab long bed). I stumbled onto a good deal on it sooner than I expected, so I still don't have the HD bars; still deciding which length I'd prefer (to start with, at least, as I'm not opposed to grabbing another set later if it makes enough of a difference).

I looked through all the recommended accessories on Yakima's site, but figured some real world hacks and mods might be out there too.

Mine have been solid since I installed them. I haven’t used them as much as I had anticipated, but I will say being able to raise the rear cross bar had made it really convenient for me as I can sneak my Trials bike under it to load without having to actually remove anything.

I just received my sidebars and I'm so disappointed, they recommended me to take the ones for long bed since I have a long bed, but even at the shortest there are 57 inches from crossbar to crossbar, I can't even put my rooftop tent with the sidebars on...

That sucks. You may want to see about listing them for sale or seeing if anyone has the shorts they'd trade outright.

The measurements are just weird as far as the max for one and min for the other. I have the shorts and wish they'd sit juuuust a hair further apart (for where I keep them 99% of the time), but the longs would have sat there and allowed me to move them in to maybe about this distance lol.
