Need some musky advice

So this summer I have a week long trip planned up north. The lake I am going to has musky and I want to catch them.

I dont have musky gear, so I am going to be buying everything this summer. I already have a rod and reel picked out that should be great for musky (and I can use it on pike if I want to rip their heads off)

But for lures I want to make sure I am buying only things that work since lures are $20-$30 each.

I picked out three 9 inch medussas, and three 13 inch medussas. I have black/orange, white, and sucker for the colors in both sizes. What else should I be looking at for lures.

My budget is about $1000 for this trip for equipment. I already have about $600 for the rod, reel, line, and leader. Leaving me around $400 for lures.

 

We are going to north star lake for a week. My buddy from Scotland and his wife and kids are going with. He loves fishing, but the biggest fish he has caught is a pickerel when he was living in Maine.

I will have to add those to my list.

 

Also I should note, I will be fishing for these in a 10 foot kayak.... so If I get something big then I am netting it and paddling to shore.

I fully expect if I catch something to get dragged around the lake like the boat from Jaws.

 

Happens all the time fishing redfish in the salt marsh… We call it a Carolina sleigh ride! Fun as hell! Don't panic, let the fish wear himself out pulling the kayak, and against your drag then get him alongside and into the net. We have sharks here too by the way, rule number one never let a shark or a stingray in your kayak.

 

Yeah, I dont even like to put pike in my kayak. Something about a slippery noodle with teeth and giant hooks thrashing around my calves makes me uncomfortable.

 

Grew up in southern Minnesota, spent summers fishing in northern Minnesota. Pike and musky are kittens compared to what's lurking in the salt water. Even the panfish have sharp gill plates, spikes, and teeth. While I never thought I would be saying this, I do have to admit fresh flounder even tops the taste of fresh walleye.

 

Yeah, My parent live on the beach in florida, Ive only fished with them a few times down there, but we got those evil catfish, a eel, a sting ray, and a croaker.

But I just finished spooling up my new musky rod. Its a 8f6i medium heavy st croix with a abu garcia revo toro beast. Damn thing is too long to fit in my truck
