Looking to pick brains of the guys who know the details..

How do you tell the difference in the rear axle housing only, from one that came with locker (trd offroad) vs the non-locker (trd sport or sr5)? I don't have a third member... just a stripped axle housing. How do I know if it is one or the other?

I know you cannot simply bolt in a locking 3rd member to a non-locking housing. So they must be different. How do you identify?

I have an axle housing in front of me... looks the same as the one in my trd sport... for as much as I can visually determine when they aren't actually side by side.

But I want to know that when I go to swap this housing with the one currently under the truck that the 3rd member will fit!

Basically I want confirmation that this axle housing is for non locking

    That is non-locking.

If it was for an E-Locker it would have 2 (IIRC) very long studs and a cutout shown in red.

Awesome, thanks for the quick response!

I've always known there was a difference.. but didn't know exactly what. So I expect that I inquired and confirmed when I bought this housing a year ago... but I just started doing work on it for my needs, and removed a bracket that my truck doesn't have, near the center section (can see the clean metal behind the red line you drew). It just occurred to me that maybe this is the bracket that holds wiring for the locker?? Whew, dodged the bullet

    Thanks again.

    Case closed.

The earlier 2nd gens had a different set up for the ABS the bracket was probably for that or possibly a load sensing proportioning valve if I remember correctly.

If your old one doesn't have it I wouldn't worry about it.

Agreed. There is no load sensing anything on my '05, but I'm sure you are right that it is a matter of the ABS wires being different.
