I know someone will chime in that they check every single bolt on the truck as well as all the fluids before driving away but I'm willing to be the majority don't check.

If you're the kind of person that checks every little thing why wouldn't you just change the oil yourself? That's what I do.

I didn’t and should have. This is far from the first time I’ve used this dealer. I have purchased several vehicles from them throughout the years. I have bought 3 tacomas and 2 4 Runners there. Never had an issue until now.

Totally agree with cutting the oil filter but the truck is in the dealer's shop and I am sure they have already pulled and discarded the oil filter.

Borescope inspections likely won't reveal anything. The engine could have cam journal wear, crank journal wear, burn as much as oil as BMWs... and a borescope inspection won't find anything. Like others have said, negotiate an extended warranty on engine mechanical issues. It costs the dealer nothing upfront.

Don't bother escalating with Toyota corporate, as it's a dealer mishap. Worst-case scenario Toyota will void the truck's powertrain warranty for dealer-induced damage.

With current market conditions, you can probably sell the truck and not lose money, but getting a new one could mean waiting half a year.

    Because its free.....

I looked under my truck and under my hood after my free oil changes. I even deflated my tires because they were at 45psi.

I too would insist on a lifetime engine warranty if they say the motor is ok minimum. With undercarriage covered in oil, I would insist a completely disassembled drive train, as impossible to get all oil cleaned . Get it home and see a few drops in the garage or driveway and you’ll be right back at dealer and inconvenienced again. It a crappy situation and you have every right to get what will satisfy you!

Yeah, sorry this happened to you. It's a sickening feeling for sure. I had something similar happen on my 2011 Hayabusa. About 30 miles from the dealer my oil plug dropped out. I had also had a new tire installed and new tires don't get as good of traction at first. I thought it felt a little more squirreley on the ride home. It must have been leaking the entire way. I shut it down immediately when the oil light came on. It leaked the remaining oil out on side of the road. Dealer came with enclosed trailer and took it back to shop Yada Yada...
The happy part was that it still ran strong as ever for the remaining time I owned it and still going strong.
Hope your new truck is good to go.

At least with the fresh oil coat on the underside I don’t need to worry about rust

 That is the way to put a positive spin on a bad situation! Congratulations on the moderate approach.

Post like these and the issues with the over tightening of the oil filter housing make me never want to use the dealership. Just for warranty stuff only.

I’ve used this dealer for years and have always taken advantage of the two year included scheduled maintenance. First issue I’ve had. Wife’s 4 runner was in earlier this year for fuel pump recall and I had them do the oil while it was in. I’m not mad at the dealer because I know whenever humans are involved in anything mistakes can happen. I’m just hoping for a resolution I can live with.

Thank God you made it out of that OK. I’m also a lifelong biker and that could have been a disaster with that oil on your rear tire.

Everyone who said the motor is fine after OP clearly stated he heard rods knocking after the motor literally ran without oil are the type of people to take their vehicles to a dealership to get oil changes, lmfao. Please do not ever attempt to give mechanical advice to anyone ever again....

    OP, your motor is fucked.

^This right here I mean it takes a whole 10 seconds to check your oil and look under the truck before you drive away. Not knocking OP tough situation hope it gets remedied.

It doesn't exactly take an expert to know that a motor with extremely tight tolerances running without oil to the point that you heard rods physically knocking means shits fucked. Metal grinded with metal in various parts of the motor. It didn't entirely shit the bed and throw a rod from a rod bearing failing and breaking through the block on scene, but the motor is still now filled with flakes of metal and an immeasurable amount of wear has been put on all the components of the motor that cannot be gauged without a full tear down. It's fucked.

All of you who don’t think the gentleman’s truck is damaged- swap your truck for his low mileage truck and move cash in the direction as if there was no oil starved engine.

And I bet you’re right. It never occurred to me to look under my truck after an oil change. Hopefully this thread will start a new SOP before driving away after a service.

Sad situation for the OP, interested in final outcome, was earnestly reading it all when I came upon your post... and it raised a couple of questions:

    - What is this coating you speak of?
    - How is a coated piston going to have any effect on wear?

The ring grooves, rings, and the cylinder walls; the pin bearings & crank bearings - are what make contact. Nothing on the piston touches. How would a coating even come into play or accomplish anything towards wear reduction?
