oil change makes huge mess

i have a 2010 reg cab 4x4 with a 4 cyl. yesterday i did my first oil change. the filter is located in an awful spot above a skid plate so when you take it off oil drips all over the top pf the skid plate. have any of you come up with a less messy way to remove the filter?

is yours the 2.7L ? if so can you tell me the bolt size for the oil pan bolts?
