I have a brake issue where my passenger rear wheel is totally locked up. On the inside of the wheel is some fluid. With a little digging on Tacomaworld it appears this is a wheel cylinder failure, causing the brake shoes to be fully engaged against the inside of the brake drum & leaking brake fluid.

I pulled the drum off (PITA) with the rust and self-adjuster and the wheel cylinder appears to be my issue. I "adjusted" the brake so I can move my truck from my driveway to my garage.

    Questions:
-Does the wheel cylinder issue make sense?
-Do I need to replace the brake shoes (both driver/passenger) or can I just replace the wheel cylinder? The material on my brake shoes has enough life left but I've heard if it gets any brake fluid on them they are shot. It's a mess inside with the rust and leaked brake fluid. I'm not sure if the shoes got covered in fluid but they definitely were exposed.
-What's the average cost for a shop to replace brakeshoes & wheel cylinders on both sides of the truck? Having been in the drum this weekend & watching some videos I think I could do this myself but I'm interest in what it might cost.

Eager to get my truck back on the road so wondering about just replacing the wheel cylinder but please let me know if I need to replace the shoes as well.

I’ve heard of a wheel cylinder seizing. But haven’t seen it happen personally.

As far as replacing the cylinder. It 2 bolts and a brake line once the shoes are removed. I honk you will be fine doing it yourself. I use vacuum caps to cap the brake line to keep fluid from running out the line.

As for the shoes, yes. You should replace them. Key word “should”. Since yours were stuck, even more the reason you “should”.

I might know a guy that didn’t replace his when his axle seal leaked. He just brake cleaned them and threw them back on.

He has driven 74k miles since. :anonymous:
