The round trip Mpg was around 14.5, however I did not tow anything down the hill, just up. The climb up to Prescott is about 4,500' so Mpg took a big hit. We are planning on heading up to the Oregon coast in May of this year, so we will be booking the campgrounds soon. Arizona is a big Snow Bird state, lots of upper midwest campers come here to get out of the cold. Campgrounds can be very difficult to get, especially if you want hook ups. Lots of dispersed camping available though. Start looking asap for late Jan or Feb. I am going to Tucson in Jan and was able to find a state park spot with just electric. Campground has a dump station and water just not at my camp spot.

Stick to the state park system, less expensive. You might even try Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds. https://www.rv-camping.org/coecampgrounds/

Be safe and enjoy, lots of beautiful coast line to see.

Thanks for the tips… Unfortunately we are doing this trip the wrong time of year but will be thankful of getting to a warmer and dryer climate. We’ve seen soo much rain these last 3 weeks, so much… the only good thing about the rain is that CA needs it!

This may mislead some. They redesigned the trans cooler; the old external cooler was scrapped for a trans cooler within the radiator. The newer Tacomas have a transmission cooler, it shares space with the radiator. You can follow your transmission fluid lines to the radiator to see where the cooler within a cooler sits in the radiator. I am not a fan of the design and will be adding an oil cooler for my trans in the coming months.

I think this is what you meant in your post. They discontinued the separate oil cooler that sat in front of the radiator, newer Tacos now have the cooler within a cooler.

Toyota literally removed the transmission radiator from the mid 2020 onwards.
the coolant radiator is the same for the 2018 and 2022 tacoma. The coolant radiator helps to regulate the trans oil temps. In the 2018 model the coolant radiator (transmission portion) is primarily used to warm up the transmission oil and the transmission radiator is used to cool the trans oil. the same coolant radiator in the 22 it’s used as double duty to warm and cool the oil.

The 2022 Tacoma uses exactly the same radiator part number as the 2018.

they did this with the Tundra too.

Like the OP said, do your research and make sure you have an appropriate set up and the Tacoma will do just fine. I have a CURT 6k WDH and Timbren SES bump stops. Redarc brake controller and had my ECU flashed with the CVC tune. Last round trip through rolling foothills I averaged 10mpg, Ca speed limit is 55 with a trailer and I maintained 55-60mph. I would feel safe traveling anywhere with this set up, understanding of course there are limitations and you have to be mindful of how you set up your load for traveling. I wont be passing anyone, but it definitely gets the job done safely
