06 4x4 has diff noise. In process of removing it. Can it be rebuilt?

    Could we have more details?

The diffies are pretty reliable. More often a bad wheel bearing will make you think the diffy is bad.

    Looking forward to more details.

Welcome to the show. There is a huge knowledge base here and we all want to help.

They can sort out location of noise with a stethoscope. What kind of modifications do you have? Wheel hard much? Tow stuff?

    Thank you guys!
I read the posted threads previously as I was told by one analyst that I needed both right front and rear wheel bearings. I listened because I read about the reliability of of the differentials and the pinion bearing being always submerged in oil. I was about to purchase both when 2 friends advised that it’s unusual for those to go bad at the same time.
Subsequently I took it to a mechanic, he jacked up the rear wheels and removed the drawing shaft, then turn the wheels. One could hear the loud rough sound emanating from the diff itself. Hence my wait until he remove the food entirely. In the AM I will get the diagnosis. hence my question, what can I expect? Anxiety is having the best of me,

The easiest diagnoses will be draining the fluid from the diffy, then straining that fluid. Any carnage will show up in the diffy fluid. A lot cheaper, too.

But how do I know to what extent is the damage?

If you see chunks of metal, you have problems.

Metal smaller than glitter, not as big a deal.

A half assed mechanic should be able to discern if the diffy is bad just from looking at the oil.

If it’s toast the diff oil will be full of silver glitter and likely chunks of metal on the drain magnet.

A blown diff roars pretty loud. Worst case you need a rebuild which isn’t a super expensive repair.

Diff has cuttings in the oil; both pinion bearing worn. Will need to do a rebuild: I s it necessary to change all 4 bearings: Front & rear plus 2 side ones?

I'd like to see a pic of what they are calling "cuttings".

Viewed the larger of the two pinion bearings, the rollers are very worn, actually loose fitting in the slots but have not actually fallen out! And I didn’t actually inspect the oil !

If the axle is apart, may as well redo all bearings
