    Hey guys,

I need to replace the parking brake cable on my 2016 Tacoma and am finding no luck via internet on how to do this. Has anyone done this on a 3rd gen, preferably a 2016? I found the parts, ranging anywhere from $75-$100 OEM. Just trying to see if anyone has done this, any problems they ran into or advice, maybe even a video!

Long backstory as to why but I can explain if needed. thanks in advance.

I have done the driver's side. I haven't looked at that other post, but if you run into any problems, DM or post and I'll be happy to help. It's a straightforward repair. Shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes or so.

Edit: that's for a first gen, so yeah.

    Which side are you doing?

I'll throw some quick pointers in here since the other thread is first gen.

You'll have to loosen the cables from inside the cab by removing the top of the center console. Loosen both of them because the tensioning thing is a balancer. Also makes it easier to get the barrel out of it. To get the cable out of the cab you'll have to break/bend the tabs where it goes through the floor. I just broke them because my old cable was done. If you're doing the driver's side the cable goes over the tank. You just have to mess with it to get it over there. There's a bracket on top of the frame rail near the tank that you should be able to remove from the wheel well. Leaf spring bracket and back to the drums and remove the two bolts holding it into the backing plate. From there, remove the drum and remove the barrel from the bell crank (attached to the brake shoe). May have to remove the shoes to do this. You can start at either end of the reinstallation. For the adjustment, I would put the nuts in the cab about halfway. Then adjust back at the drum. Adjust the shoes up until they drag on the drum. Then temporarily install a tire and see how the e-brake is. You'll probably have to tighten them up more. Usually the standard for proper e-brake is six clicks up, truck in drive and see if it holds. Then try it at 2k rpms. That's the VA safety inspection standard.

We should compare stories and see who's cable breaking story is more pathetic (mine is pretty bad). Good luck!

thank you! This helps a lot actually. Seems like a big task to take on but it’s worth saving the $400+ that I would be charged on labor. Did you need any other parts besides the cable itself?

Nope. Can't really think of anything that might need replacing.

    No problem.

My replacement involves a brake caliper coming loose (My rears are converted), somehow tangling in the brake cable and breaking it.

Can you post or shoot me the info? My driver side rear is frayed (from rubbing on the larger leaf stack) and disengaging the ebrake is hit and miss now.

I cannot seem to find any tutorials or videos on how to do this for the 3rd gen...

In all honesty, my post I made describes the process pretty well. I actually had to go back and look at it to remember what I said. It's really not hard at all. Bring some patience or beer and you're good to go.
