    Sub'd!

Worst thing that ever happened at my local dealer is a tech didn't reconnect the transmission shift linkage after my frame was replaced a and it would jump from drive into neutral whenever I hit the brakes; I have a trusted independent mechanic I bring my truck to for anything I don't feel comfortable doing or can't legally do myself. The thing I can't legally do myself is the yearly emissions test and safety inspection required here in Pennsylvania, but my mechanic even undercuts the dealer there!

In my opinion, if the engine is damaged, the dealership should pay for a brand new engine or one out of a totaled with less mileage than yours. However, Toyota engines are pretty durable and some of the stuff I'm reading in this thread would indicate that built-in failsafes might have saved your engine from total annihilation.

doubt it. Otherwise classic cars would do the same. Not really going to affect "value" significantly. Its not like you are restoring a "numbers matching" classic car. Maybe in 30yrs it might be something but even still. Theres too many tacomas out there.

At least 2nd and 3rd Gens; 1st Gens are now pretty rare!

That’s assuming others are observant enough to notice, but that seems to be the common thread, dealership mechanics don’t pay attention.

One of the few things California is good for at this point would be rust-free 1st Gen Tacomas!

No I haven’t. Hasn’t quite been 3 business days since this happened. I’m sure as other posters have said the diagnostics on my truck is a job for a senior tech who probably has some things to put back together for other people before he opens mine up.

At this point I’m not really out anything except the time spent waiting for the tow truck. I was immediately put in a more the adequate loaner. I’m still pretty sure I’ll be contacted sometime this week.

if this truck ends up at Barrett Jackson lack of matching numbers won’t matter-the seller can print all the pages of this thread, frame it, and the auctioneer can command a premium for it being the famous Rannyhill Tacoma

    Like, so many.
I mean, I admire your patience, but I think you need to keep making sure the ball is moving down the field. They should absolutely have some information for you at this point.

    Question for any/all:

How difficult is it to change the oil/filter in one of these trucks....

Harder than most other cars but still pretty easy. The filter is more complicated because it doesn't use a spin on type filter.
    edit doesn't

Here's the spin on filter in question currently on my Sport and the aluminum one I plan to use during next oil change:

Whatever happens, please make a note of your VIN somewhere so you can watch for that truck a few years down the road. It might be a fun challenge to see if you can find it and the history later on. I've sold cars years ago that I have wondered what happened to them, but do not have the VIN.

    It's a shopping mall queen...lol.

I have not gone off-road with her...not in a hurry to either. A drive on the beach (when I get my Delaware permit) is about the extent of my use of the 4X4.

Plus, I have the TRD Skid which required me to remove the 4 bolts to get to that filter housing. I was checking the undercarriage yesterday also inspecting my Talon CAT plate & bolts.

more difficult than the 2nd gen. pain in the ass IMO. the plastic (ABS) canister cap can crack when tightening. a few years back because of posts on it here i purchased a spare one just in case i mucked it up, i have a backup. the leak had to have been from the canister since it was in for a oil change, any one of us that do DIY oil changes could have found the leak in 5 minutes. if their tec over tightened it and caused it to crack they will have a lot of explaining to do to Toyota corporate.

Still, I'd like to think anyone handy with tools, who makes their living under a vehicle..... should know what they are doing, otherwise find another line of work.

Take me for instance, put some tools in my hands and watch-out... duck, get out of the way... whatever.... so I know my limits and I just hand the tools to
my wife who runs circles around most 'pros' ... that goes for plumbing/ electrical/ wood working/ roofing/ paving/ whatever she has her mind on...

She taught me many years ago:
The person who knows HOW to do a thing will always have a job.
The person who knows WHY to do a thing will always be the boss.
( and she knows the 'how' and the 'why' ).... oh well she used to work on fighter jets so there ya go.

    OOOOhhhhhhh!

She's a Fighter MX (Maintenance) Guru!

I'm a supply guy who worked out in the triple Nickel at Aviano. I definitely appreciate what those technicians do.

Sounds like she could have been Backshop MX Engine Troop, Expediter, or specialty R2 (R-Square/Remove & Replace) troop.

I went TDY to Zaragoza, Spain and watched these people kick-ass making sure ACFT were ready to Fly, Fight & Win!

I also supported a C-130 Squadron at Dyess AFB, TX who took me to PSAB, Saudi Arabia by way of Sigonella NAS, Sicily. Man, those were great TDYs!

Of course, you can't fly without supply! lol

Oh yes! Thanks for the reminder!!!

I'll find some straight back dirt road and turn it on. A couple miles outside Dover, DE and I am in the sticks!

EDIT: I did use it during this past winter snow events.
