Hi Folks. I have a 2nd Gen 2006 Tacoma Sport V6 with 282,000 mile (runs like a champ) and looking to purchase a 3rd Gen Tacoma V6. Although both engines are V6, is there a difference in engine/transmission reliability between the 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacos?

Take good care of it ( which you do with that kind of mileage) and I see no reason not to get the same type of reliability

Well you've had 10 more years than the oldest 3rd gen. While there are 'some' high mile units around, there hasnt been enough time to balance the numbers yet.

If yours 'runs like a champ', why not roll with it another few years?

That was my intention. I wasn't planning on buying a new truck for a few years but, when I heard rumors that Toyota was going to introduce the 4th gen Tacoma in 2023, I didn't want to buy the 1st year new gen and wasn't keen on a 4 cylinder with turbo. I knew what the V6 was capable of in terms of reliability so I didn't want to be stuck with a 4th gen.

I wouldn't be too concerned about a first year Toyota. I bought one of the first Gen 3s and did not have any problems.

I don’t think you will find a good answer to your question. Automobile reliability is not a simple thing to define or measure.

3rd gens are solid, shouldn’t have any reason to be hesitant moving to a 3rd gen

The 4th Gen is supposed to be 2024 so you still have a little time to snag a 3rd.
