Toyota has two different part numbers that I have found for an OEM trailer hitch that fits the 2nd gen trucks. The part numbers are PT791-04050 and 51908-04010.

Does anyone know the difference between them? Is one of them a class III and the other a class IV?

It looks like 51908-04010 might be for long bed trucks? Is says extra long wheel base in the listing so id assume maybe that is the difference.

I did end up figuring out that part number 51908-04010 is the class IV that comes on the "factory" toe package for 2nd gen trucks. This is the unit with the 6500 lbs. tow capacity.

Good info, thanks! Mine is pretty rusty and I'm considering replacing it. Looks like it may be a tough find though. Checked a few dealers and none in stock. I'd prefer to stay oem, but maybe I'll go aftermarket if I can't find something.

@Chris(NJ) happy it helped you. I looked for a while to find an aftermarket option that matched the 6500lbs load cap as the OEM, however, didn't have any luck. None of the aftermarket options went over 5000lbs.

Not sure if that matters with what you toe but just a heads up.

Figured I'd piggy back on this thread as I'm trying to replace my OEM hitch and not shell out dealer money for the new OEM hitch. I have a 2009 DBL Cab TRD Sport with the towing package so I was trying to keep it class IV if possible. Trying to find a takeoff hitch in New England that doesn't have the same rust as mine is like finding a unicorn and I'm starting to think it's not going to happen. I found a hitch on EBAY that looks like the OEM hitch but it's listed as class III. If this will work with my current setup but just not be rated for the same weight I'm considering going for it. I wonder if anyone has had any luck with this hitch...?

@Promontory Rider did you end up going ahead with that eBay hitch? I'm in the same situation regarding replacing the OEM tow package hitch and considering the same one you linked to, just from a different dealer.

@phineasrex I didn't ever pull the trigger on it but I'd be curious to hear how it works out. That same ebay vendor has a website that I found LINK HERE. I've been sidetracked on a house addition / remodel but it's definitely on my list of things to do. Frankly I'll probably put it off until next Spring because our house is going to take all of my time for a while.

I'm in the same situation here in Maine. My truck has the tow package, 6,500 lb hitch, which is very rusty. I've contacted a few online Toyota parts retailers, and they all told me it's on national backorder with no expected ETA (as well as the chrome bumper, stock exhaust, and other parts). I really wanted to keep it factory, especially since aftermarket hitches are only rated to 5,000 lb.

I like the Hooke Road hitch linked above since it appears factory and will also bolt up to the bumper bar and accept the factory wiring harness clip, but it states the material is 3/16" and I just measured mine as 1/4".

The Reese website shows a class III/IV and a IV for my truck, and mentions that III/IV hitches in general are rated to 6,000lb gross trailer, and IV are rated to 10,000 (excluding weight distributing). That gives me more confidence, even if the specific hitch is only rated for 5,000. I may end up going with one of these and making a wiring bracket to hold the harness if I can't find a good used factory hitch.

I ended up getting a used OEM (6,500lbs. option) hitch on eBay from a non-salt state that was in perfect condition. When I was looking it seemed like a handful of scrappers had these listed for decent prices. Shipping was the biggest damage but luckily some had free shipping deals at times.

Keep up the search. I've found 3-4 over the last year in decent shape. Trick is to look often and vary your search.

Here's one that doesn't even mention the hitch because they think it's part of the bumper.
