    Hello all,

Sorry for this post but I was in the middle of prepping for a backpacking trip this weekend and noticed grease on my right LCA. I investigated further and noticed a tear in what I'm pretty sure is the CV Boot (haven't dealt with this before personally, sorry).

I was wondering if y'all think I'd be able to do a 500 mile round trip this weekend before addressing the issue early next week. I'm pretty sure this is recent as I am usually very attentive to my truck.

Images attached. I appreciate your thoughts! Thanks!

One of my CV boots was ripped and I wouldn't be able to replace it until the following week, so I wrapped a gallon size plastic baggie around it and secured it with zip ties to keep the grease from flying out. Worked like a charm.

    I don’t know if I’d intentionally do a 500 mile road trip.
But you could buy a parts store axle for about $150 or less and have it swapped in about 1 or so.
I don’t think you would even need to remove the caliper or rotor.
Just run 2 lug nuts down on the rotor to keep in place.

    Remove axle nut
    Unbolt the brake line bracket
Disconnect the ABS Sensor and wire
    Remove tie rod from spindle
Unbolt bottom 2 ball joint mount bolts
Pull the spindle out and spin it toward the front of the truck.
    Remove axle

You might have to remove the caliper, but I don’t think so.
If you do, just unbolt it and hang it out of the way.

In a perfect world I'd reboot it
in a pinch, I'd google torn cv boot repair tape and pick whatever looks best, doesn't necessarily have to be tape; can be any jury-rig repair if it works and is quick, easy, cheap
to hobble along until a proper fix later when possible

500miles? Easy. It will be messy though.

I'd run it and re-boot that stock axle when I got back.

If you are worried about it swap the axle and re-boot the OEM and re-install when you have time. Actually, re-boot both axles.

I bought the CV boot kits and did both axles. You need to remove the tripod bearing to do it. Hammer/brass bar and puller couldn't do it so I needed to throw it on my press to remove and reinstall.
