Not really "Firearm" but it kills!

Cool. With as screwy as Hawaii's gun laws are I'm surprised it's not considered a firearm like they are in some states.

I believe by definition "Firearm" is "to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive"
Since this uses compressed air the ATF doesn't recognize it as a "Firearm"
Which state considers a pellet gun as a firearm?

I know NJ for one, but some states have some funky laws. SC has some rules about what caliber you can use for hunting.

https://outdoorever.com/air-gun-laws-by-state/ Assuming this site is correct, just one I pulled up on a search.

Wow! Sort of sad that our Rights can be "infringed upon" Even beyond the 2nd Amendment.
They make weak Laws that don't deter breaking the law. And then they make more Laws to take away more of our Rights. (Maybe that's the "Plan"?)

As I understand it, Hawaii has some pretty draconian laws regarding firearms as well, especially handguns. We've got some pretty stupid ones here in SC as well, mainly dealing with concealed weapons permits (we have some real 'tards in our legislature and pressure from people immigrating from states that want SC to be more like the place they left for some reason), even though overall we're doing better than most as far as government overreach. Despite the recent Supreme Court's rulings, lots of places are doing their best to restrict an enumerated right by any means they can think of. See also what CA and NY are saying they're going to do after the recent NYSRPA v. Bruen- they are blatantly violating what the ruling says.

I'd like to try deer hunting with one of the modern air rifles, the iguana hunting down in Florida looks pretty cool too- getting rid of an invasive pest species (I actually applied for one of the hog hunting jobs your DLNR had open back in the '90s but never heard back from them). Air guns have been used for quite a while now, there are multiple accounts of the one Lewis and Clark carried and they were popular as cane guns for a while as well (incidentally, not an NFA item which make me wonder why nobody is making one, or a muzzle loader version).

California does not consider a pcp/springer to be a firearm. The definition is essentially what toku58 said. They are legal to shoot in your backyard unless specifically prohibited by city ordinance. In my city it is completely legal. I own a springer, but have long had an interest in PCPs. I with the whole setup was not so expensive. I could buy 2-3 shotguns for the same price.
