27f AGM upgrade on a 22’ OR. Do I need a new battery tray?

I won’t be into anything too gnarly, but I put some good miles on the truck for work and fun. I would like to upgrade my battery to a 27f AGM that will support a full time, on board fridge and was wondering:

1- how necessary is a beefier tray to protect the mounting surface and structure?

2- where the hell can I find one if I do need one?

I was in the same boat. You can order the 27f Toyota factory tray from OEM Part Source. The tray itself is the same quality as the one you already have, just bigger. The biggest concern is the supporting understructure, which will likely crack if you do any heavy offroading. Unfortunately not many good options to beef that up without extensive work. If you're mostly pavement pounding or towing, you'll be fine.

Here's a copy and paste from my order

Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total
    74431-0C020 Battery Tray $34.17 1 $34.17

    Thanks, friend.

The 27f is a bit lighter and only 10 amp hours or so less than the 31 so I think I’m sticking with it. I originally planned on a 31, but I’m only running the fridge (Iceco VL45), no lights or other fancy doodads. I am adding a Lensun hood panel so I’m hopping shedding a few lbs will be helpful since I’ll be topped off regularly.

The other thing to consider is your current alternator will not support/ charge (fully) an AGM battery. There is is a way to reprogram, I know OTT can reprogram to support a AGM. I was asked when tuned.

I've heard this claim many times and I've had an AGM for the last two years without getting a tune and/or changing the voltage. Whenever I connect it to a battery trickler, it fully charges almost right away, so I think this is an overblown concern. Haven't had any problems whatsoever

Yup. It’s not something people need to worry about. 99% of people are gonna notice zero difference either way.

H7, did not need to change the tray. I did modify the bracket a bit. 4 year free replacement. Use a battery tender to top off your AGM once a month. Make sure to set it to AGM mode. Don’t change the charging output on the trucks alternator, not good to ecu voltage regulators.

Most trickle chargers use a lower/safer voltage to maintain the battery. They, like our alternators, don't always have the voltage needed to fully charge the AGMs. Quick look at the Battery Ttender brand says they charge at 13.3 to 13.5 volts, with an AGM liking 14 or higher volts.

I ran two AGM house batteries to run my fridge and stuff for over a year and it worked without issue. When I did the voltage booster in my 2nd gen to pump up the voltage the at-rest voltage of my AGMs went up close to 0.5 volts. I got a sizeable increase in runtime/capacity. So yeah, they'll work fine without the increased voltage, but you'll use more of the AGMs capacity with higher voltage charging.
