We are considering adopting a milk snake. Any care tips? Diet, substrate, do they require uv lighting? Or just heat?

I have been keeping tarantulas for a while so I know proper care is important

Aspen or bark is best for substrate. If it's a juvenile I suggest pinkies. As the snake grows I'd go to fuzzys. Best temps for them is between 86° and 88° not good to go over that. They also need a hot and cool side, cool side of the tank should be around 76°. They need a good hide spot and a large bowl of water they like to soak in it.

Do you buy your pinkies online? If so, where? I'm seeing a big variety in prices

Best bet is online. Or reptile shows. I normally try to go to reptile shows they do bulk sales and has been the cheapest option. That's for frozen. BTW milk snakes are great. Also don't handle the snake for 48 hours after they ate.

Very stubborn snakes. One of them died a couple months ago. I think the guy who sold them to me. Sold me sick snakes

That would really suck. Not just the money but also losing a pet.

Meet Jonathan Davis the corn snake. I see the previous shed is still on the last inch of its tail. Do I needto worry or is that ok?Resized_20230402_190404.jpg 20230402_191628.jpg

You should be able to gently pull the shed off.
You can also soak him in warm water to help the shed come off easier. Get a medium size tub.

A question on temps for corn snakes.

I've kept tarantulas for a while and found them to not be nearly as picky on temps as I was originally led to believe

How much should I worry about maintaining temperatures in the snakes enclosure? My house is around 68-70 degrees. There is a uth already under the tank that I've been running for about 10hrs a day. There's also a heat lamp on top, but I suspect the bulb is just a normal light bulb as I don't really feel any heat when I hold my hand under it.

I want to do what's right for the little guy, thanks for the help
