I don't think an extended warranty will give you any piece of mind. Every time you hear a sound or the engine uses some oil, you'll have it in the shop. And I probably would too.

i dont like this for you at all. More needs to be done. In my area you cant find a 4x4 on a lot. So its months with an order to replace that truck.

There are so many different variables and possible outcomes here that I think the only thing to do is hold tight, read the inspection report once complete, post it here, and go from there. This thread is slam packed with speculation of all sorts and very few hard facts to go on, yet.

You bring up good points as an experienced tech.

These inspection processes/results should be in the report at a minimum.

Correct. When OP shows up, if at minimum. If the rod caps and bearing, the main caps and bearings, cam shafts and journal caps aren’t sitting on a bench, I’d say call me when those are off and walk out. Under no circumstances is a visual inspection with a borescope acceptable.

If I had to guess it was scoped with none of what you’ve suggested being done. This is based on my conversation today. That’s why I requested the report be emailed so I can bounce it off of my new knowledgeable friends here on TW.

or tries to hide if it was the fault of the dealer and not a fault of something bad from the factory.
if corporate toyota says it is tech error they might try and leave the dealer to resolve it. would think the dealer would have some kind of malpractice insurance for this kind of situation.

The dealer will now dig their heels regarding their findings even though it is simply not possible that running that engine without oil didn’t cause damage.

That’s exactly why if I ultimately decide to keep the truck I’m asking for a mega extended warranty so they’ll have an opportunity to back up that “finding”.

How much warranty are you going to ask for? Isn’t their longest 7 years 130k miles? If that works for you, great, but that’d be a no-go for me.

I’ll just have to feel them out once I have time to digest the report. Once I post what was done I’m sure the experts here will quickly weigh in on whether what they did would be considered a proper inspection or not.

If for no other reason than to hash this out - I guess what I’m getting at is what’s the point of a 100k warranty on an engine that has proven itself good for hundreds of thousands of miles if treated right? This one experienced some childhood trauma so there’s no telling what the future holds for it but the dealership just showed you their cards by claiming there was no damage. They’ll dig their heels in on that now. In the interest of saving you time - I’d grab the highest ear you can (this guy undoubtedly knows your story) and ask that they exchange the truck for you. It was new when you brought it in, damaged goods on the way out. If they still don’t see it your way I guess you live with it or lawyer up after having independent analysis done.

In my opinion (which obviously means nothing); this is a very generic answer given to you solely to see if you'll go away or dig in your heels. I'm sure they're hoping you'll accept their response and go away.

The Dealership most likely has Insurance for this type of event...might be a huge deductible!

Not being in the middle of this, I can't know for sure, but I sense that you are right. I have been waiting -- and have thought the OP was doing the right thing -- until the dealer showed their hand. And, now they have. They have shown you that they find no damage -- which means their opening salvo is a big "you get nothing." They may or may not be serious about that -- as you suggest they could be testing you to see what they can get away with.

I would tell them to send you the report (as you did) but also send a message to them that you are disappointed in their response, you have very serious doubts about the technical review that they did, and, of course, they have an incentive to say everything is fine because it is in their interest to do so. I would let them know that their response cannot be trusted and that you are looking at all of your options, including everything from a second opinion to downright legal action. You should then let the sales person know they are playing games and that you are prepared to respond accordingly -- and see if the salesperson can get that message to them.

So here is where we are: 1) They have now taking a position (the truck is find, pound dirt). You now need to look at your range of options, including getting a second report from an independent source, trading in the vehicle, pursing the issue with Toyota, looking at potential legal remedies, etc. You don't have to threaten them. Just let them know this is what you are looking at and how they respond to your concerns will determine your course of action.

They have revealed themselves and their position seems terrible ... the burden is on them to prove the test was exhaustive. And in the end, they have an incentive for the engine to be okay. If I was in your shoes, I would ask the truck be delivered to place where you can get a second opinion from a Toyota Certified Master Mechanic. See how they respond to that ...

Oh. And let them know the cost for the full engine review from a second source should and will be paid by the dealer.

If the dealer says there's no damage, you have 60,000 miles to prove them right or wrong! Drive the truck until the expiration of the powertrain warranty or whatever extended engine warranty you're able to negotiate. Trade it in or sell it private party at that time.

What made you trade that one in? Essentially a new truck still
