    I drive a Miata.
Spent some time behind the wheel of a few. The best small engine I've driven was a Merc 300E turbo, and even that was a laggy ass dog. Push the pedal, wait 5 seconds, and then it would decide to go. Maintenance was a bitch, and despite pushing nearly 40mpg it still had a higher cost of operation.

Every one I've driven got nowhere fast. Sure, they all had low end grunt, but if you're wanting to merge on an on-ramp and not plow the west pasture, that low torque wasn't really useful.

Ah, I see the problem the second gen part of my comment was in reference to the engine only, the current gen hilux does not offer the 3.5 only the 4.0

Toyota makes the Tacoma and Tundra in San Antonio,Texas for the entire world. In 2020 they started making them in Mexico as well. Word out there was they were supposed to halt production of the Tacoma in Texas sometime in late 2021 to make way for the new Sequoia. I can't confirm if that has happened yet. I can't really say if the quality is equal or better from either plant, but personally, I think it's a mistake for Toyota to halt production in the U.S. It's one of the reasons I wanted one. I know a few other people who own Tacomas and I haven't heard hear comments/complaints about build quality regardless of where they were assembled. On mine, (2nd gen) the door, hood and other body seams are perfect, the paint has no flaws, drips, or dirt, and except for the intermittent tics and rattles from the dash plastics, the interior quality is nice, and it doesn't leak.

OP: Welcome to the forum! I'll parrot what others say here re: why the Hilux isn't available here: emissions, safety features, yada yada yada. They'd sticker for 45k + stripped, in the U.S. I'd love a Diesel option, but I think those days are gone in the U.S. No demand except for "enthusiasts" now with the ridiculous prices for diesel fuel.

IMO hilux is very ugly, and looks more like a car to me. Also, look at that approach angle…

Hilux sucks. Firstly, it looks like crap. Secondly passenger diesels are stupid in the North American market. Nothing but trouble with all the DEF fluid and DPF and whatnot.

This crappy Toyota fugly-fest truck made in Thailand is better left overseas. It has no relation to the Hilux trucks of the past. Hard pass.

No, no you wouldn't. I had a "small diesel motor getting 45mpg" in a 2012 VW Jetta. VW said they could build an efficient, clean, durable motor. They couldn't. So they cheated, making it clean for the EPA test, and efficient everywhere else. The jury was still out on the durable part.
    1) Efficient
    2) Clean
    3) Durable

    Pick any two.

And I'd say that goes for any modern Diesel sold in the US. They're just too complex and require too much maintenance.

efficient and clean are same in and modern engine. The most efficient reaction is one in which the only byproducts are co2 and h2o, this is also what is the cleanest reaction, no strait carbon or carbon monoxide.

The "clean diesel" was very "efficient" in that it got great mileage. It wasn't "clean" because it was emitting lillegal levels of NO and needed a particulate filter on the back end. Should I say "fuel efficient" or "economical" instead?

Chevy Silverado ZR2 is looking good to me, can get that with a 3.0 diesel 277HP/460TQ, 1800 lbs payload, supposedly 30 mpg, 33” tires (might be able to squeeze 35s)…sounds decent on paper.

If your getting NO2 its not very efficient or clean in terms of complete combustion, just poor design.

The Silverado is the best looking full sized truck. I particularly like it in "Trail Boss" trim.

I'd buy one with your money.
