legitimate question? I’ve read in this forum from a couple of members that the Tacoma has a car engine. Why? What does that mean?

    Oh look, another mod....
Actually, the Tacoma (the V6 anyways) engine comes from their mini-van/SUV lineup.

Toyota made an engine and put it a lot of cars. It’s financially smarter that way.
Same thing with Nissan and the vq35 engine. They put that engine in the maxima, Altima, minivan Nissan Quest, suv pathfinder, truck frontier.

    It's a camry engine.

Older Toyotas had completely different V6's for trucks vs cars. Like 3.4L 5VZ-FE in Tacoma vs 3MZ 3.3L in the camry. Truck engines should have more lower end torque, not high end horsepower like a race car. Just my opinion.

I’m not sure there is a difference between a truck engine and a car engine unless we are talking about heavy duty trucks. I don’t understand why people are hung up on this. Buy a semi tractor if you want a “truck” engine.

LOL - Toyota surely gives a shit about it or else the 2GR-FKS would be used in every modern petrol powered Hilux, Land Cruiser and other Toyota flagship of 4x4 offroad reliability around the world. Strangely, Toyota has opted to keep the 1GR in those vehicles...

Just stirring the pot here folks. Not trying to poke anyone in the eye :)

OP - the 3.5L 2GR-FE/FKS is a great motor and will serve you well. There is truth behind the fact it was primarily designed as a car/van/crossover motor whereas the 1GR was designed to replace the 3.4L 5VZ and has similar torque delivery to that motor.

At the end of the day it doesn't make much of a difference and Toyota is just trying to get better gas mileage for the current Taco. It's just as reliable as the 1GR motor and performs quite well in a truck application

    OME and worth every penny.
Truck engines historically had lower revving or higher torque if not engine than cam profiles in trucks.
An example being the FE family Fords (no 428 in trucks, few 390s even) or the 3RZ Toyota not used in cars with a under 3.0L

Putting higher revving engine places power peaks below cruising speeds. increases mileage but a heavier vehicle has a harder time speeding up.
More gears makes this moot unless you just don't like wringing an engine's neck.

That's the best compliment I can get

So yeah, you shouldn't care what people say. 2x4, car engine, If you like your truck, it's all that matters. After that, well old white dude (lets be real, that 95% of Tacoma owners) don't like change much.

    Applications (calendar years):

The 2GR-FKS is a 3.5 litres (3,456 cc), 24-valve DOHC (with VVT-iW and VVT-i) V6 engine that combines the D-4S system from the 2GR-FSE with the simulated on-demand Atkinson cycle
