Because hp only tells half of the story. Torque tells the other half.
    They do different things.

The Tacoma is presumed to be under load longer than an RX350, so they tuned it for payload and towing.

Underhood temps would be bonkers and fuel economy would be worse if it had the high performance engine.

Probably for similar reasons that an F550 has less power then an F250 with the same engine-detune for longevity when you expect to be working the engine harder.

Well yes i know all this also, and i do not want to have to use premium fuel for it,
But i "Wish' it had about 10 to 15 more HP and Torque to solve the gear hunt problem better. (more so the torque)

It seems like the supercharged guys, who were forced to return to stock trans mapping, do not seem to think power solved the driveability issues. In my experience, tuning did. More power would always be nice tho.

I really don’t care, it’s reliable and suits my needs. I was wondering why those comments, as far as I know other companies do that too..

Most vehicles get faster after each new gen. The Tacoma has gotten slower with the 3rd gen. The 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma are faster in the 1/4 mile. They most definitely have more low end torque. Hopefully Toyota steps in the right direction with the 4th gen.

There's a reason SO many 3rd gen Tacoma owners opt for a tune, it's just not right in stock form.

Own a LX470 currently. Have owned a V8 4runner and a GX470. Toyota V8 was amazing, can't believe they are stepping away from it.

Same with the turbodiesel lol. I wish they had that engine in the American market. My friend recently bought a 1996 Hilux Surf with the turbodiesel and it’s probably the most reliable vehicle he’s ever owned. @ hiluxsurfy on instagram

It doesn't mean anything. Other than they all want and LS swap. You know, that car motor . . .

Very true. My DD is a '22 F-550 with the 6.7 Diesel. There's an emissions decal on the passenger-side valve cover which refers to it as a 'Vocational Engine' LOL

I owned a 2004 Sequoia and the V8 in that was so smooth compared to the big 5.7 V8 in my 2008 Sequoia. I was excited for the new Sequoia but knowing it’s a V6 turbo and hybrid, nope not for me. I guess I will be shopping for a used LX570 .

Manufacturers have been doing this for years; using truck engines and cars, and car engines in trucks. Look up the Ford 4.6 modular engine, amazing engine that served many vehicles.

back in the 90-2000 chevy mainly use the same engine but with different cam profiles dependent on the vehicle they are going to be installed on. for 1500 truck the 5.7 "truck" engine was an iron block( heavy) with Cam profile that favors low to mid end torque. but if you check the Corvette or camaro of the time they will be mostly an aluminum block ( ligther ) with a cam profile for more HP than torque.
also this was something used by people doing LS swaps (SBC350 maybe) they will say "i got a truck motor for the swap" meaning it was an iron block with the higher torque profile.

as for the engine used in the tacoma. is the same even if you take it from a car, SUV or truck.

I sure do like the 4.0 liter V6 motor in my FJ Cruiser. What a rock solid engine that has been and it has plenty of power for both highway running and trail running.

Imo, after owning a 4.7 v8 tundra, the 3.5 v6 isn't horrible, its got enough low end for light duty work thats suited me. Could it use more, yeah, but it is what it is. I'd like to see something like a 4.3 v6 in there. A friend has an older s-10 4x4 with one that still gets 20 mpg, yet has better low end, and more liner power band than the tacoma 3.5.

OP, what that means is that parts availability and development will be there for a long time to come and that's a good thing.
