I'd like to see a booster designation that includes "-50" at some point.

Then you're going to have to get with the faa and make them prolong their review. Elon wants to start using starship to launch starlink asap and they're more or less ready to go on that plan as soon as the faa approves Boca Chica for launches. After that it won't be long before Falcon 9 gets retired imo.

You don't think they'll keep F9s as a cubesat rideshare competitor with other companies like Rocket Lab and the like?

Also, I don't have to do anything to get the FAA to prolong their review. We're already 3 months past the first deadline. :angrygirl:

I recently left SpaceX after 3 years of working as a manufacturing and subsequently launch engineer on the F9 and Crew Dragon programs, and of course at times being roped into Starship maximum priority surges with the rest of the company. My years with SpaceX were some of the most formative in my life. I left with a genuine understanding of what it means to work hard, for something that matters, and with people that really care and do the same. Throughout my time at the company, I received numerous patches and pieces of memorabilia including actual flown flight hardware, I always took pride in being a part of each mission. This is the last token I received from the company.

I don't think so. Starship is supposed to be an order of magnitude cheaper to fly than the F9. The recovery operations for fairings and drone ship landings alone likely cost more than the projected cost of Starhip launches. Then there's the disposable second stage that likely costs as much as a Starship launch. They'll most likely just do ride shares with Starlink launches which i believe they already do on the F9. It's insane and exciting to think that that beast could compete like that, but if he pulls it off, it will truly change the industry.

And thats something someone from the FAA that doesn't want other people to know they're from the FAA would say!!!o_O

I think you might be my hero!
That's only because of increased mass lifting capability. I don't think F9 will go quietly into the night.

    We could just ask @BamBeds...

    Haha I'm honored.

I agree - falcon is unlikely to go quietly into the night. It will be many years before it is completely replaced by Starship because of demand for high-value payloads like spy satellites that are launched for govt. customers like the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), which requires the launch vehicle to undergo an immense amount of review and certification. Even if the payload only weighs 1000kg but costs $10 billion - it won't be riding a starship for a very long time.

I work for Fastenal and recently found out that there is a branch in Brownsville, TX and I figure they sell to SpaceX and all the construction guys. Makes me jealous.

If you don't mind me asking, @PzTank wants to know why you left SpaceX?

As for the F9 after Starship becomes operational, I’ve always thought they’d lease it to another aerospace company (like Blue Origin) that needs a boost to get going..
