Got another “is it worth is?” Question.

2018 Tacoma TRD Sport, Access Cab, 6spd Manual, and in the color I want.

86,000 miles. All oil changes, diffs and transfer case just done (should have happened at every 30, dealer said it’s probably fine if I start doing service every 30k), pretty clean body, little dings that’ll happen quickly in my case. Service department said it was pretty clean and not missing anything.

Should I be concerned with the missing diff / transfer case service?

    $26-28000

Been waffling back and forth between new ones and am having big concerns with a $550ish payment. This used one takes it way back to a comfortable level.

    Thoughts?

    Oh look, another mod....
Don't ask a bunch of random strangers on the internet to help you make a major financial decision. You know if you want or don't want it. You know if you can afford it or not afford it. Do what you feel is right.

    Still thinking about it.
No. Many (most?) vehicles never get gear oil replacements. Especially if it’s had normal/light use… no worries.

You’re either going to hope ya find a new one that’s similar to what ya want and pay new truck prices but know reliability won’t be an issue; or take this one presuming it’s what ya want for far less money but accepting the risk of it being used and not 100% knowing if it has any issues down the line. It’s that simple. Pay more for peace of mind or accept a certain amount of risk for less money. Tacomas are extremely reliable in most cases (ignoring all the one off situations where people hate their truck for XY or Z reason). But like gudujarlson said, only you can answer that question.

That was the answer I was curious about.

Added the finances to avoid everyone saying “just get a new one”.

    Thanks gang.

With the way the market is now that is a good price so I’d say go ahead and get it, you can always trade up in a few years.

Sounds like a great truck and good price to me.

I'm at about 74k miles with mostly highway miles and when I changed the diffs for the first time at 60k the oil looked fresh and clean.

My truck sounds and drives like it did when I drove it off the lot 4 years ago (which includes a bunch of ticking at idle.)

I'd order a new Ranger XL, 86,000 miles later you would be where you are if you bought the 2018 Tacoma. The Ranger is already better on paper than the Tacoma. Perform the recommended maintenance on the Ranger and it will probably last you 30 years. Or buy a new Tacoma, you can always trade in either truck when ever you want.

If I had to do it all over again with any car financing, I would never finance anything ever and just pay cash when I can actually afford it. All cars come and go. I'm working towards being debt free in the next couple years

Think of all the money that would save. Tacomas can get expensive.

Lol I get what your saying but I think the Tacoma isn't the problem, it's the other badass Tacomas we see that makes us shell out the money.

There's many days I wonder if I would save more money by flushing it down the toilet than spending on these trucks.

Of course it’s worth it. What’s does a brand new truck exactly the way you’d want it including the color cost (in cash and the wait to find the right one)?

Saving 5k is saving 5k. Saving 10k is saving 10k. It’s worth the cost difference, whatever that difference is.

They’re both used cars in no time at all. They’re both equally reliable.

Unless you suspect the used one has 10k worth of damage/repairs it’ll need then it’s worth it.

    I vote do it

You sound practical, and this is a practical choice. I bought mine to hopefully get 15+ years of daily driving, then turn it into a retirement/ranch truck. I’ve been getting the dealer trade in offers but unless the delta gets below $3k, it’s not worth it in my mind. It’s been as low as $5k and I’m at 60k miles. You’re a bit higher in miles, but the savings are much greater… probably $15k+.

If it's 4x4, that's a 35-37k vehicle new today at MSRP. Basically, 8k off a new one for 80,000 miles which I see as a bad deal. The same basic rule I use dating. You're paying for mileage, which is the real wear and tear tracker.

My suggestion, drive a beater and save for a few years. Only ever buy what you can pay for in cash.
