Why flat? I’m a semi gloss guy, feel like it sheds dirt better…probably doesn’t

I kinda have that mentality, semi floss or gloss because it "sheds dirt" when in reality after a trip or two everything looks like stained dirt

It seems like semi gloss is easiest to lay down or touch up without getting stripes though

It's mostly just personal preference. I've always used flat black on the frame, control arms, and axle, but semi-gloss is nice. Looks better on bumpers and sliders IMO though.

What made you decide to go with hydro bumps? I think it is definitely the right way to do it for running fast with IFS but how most Tacomas are setup the bump limits close to half of the wheel travel. I feel like this would hurt crawling and wouldn’t allow the shock to work to its full potential when going fast.

Some other guys talk about using low profile rubber bumps to hinder less of the travel. Maybe there is a way to setup the bump stop in a place that limits the wheel travel closer to 1:1 but I can’t think of any good ones.

also doesn’t look like there are any hydro bumps less than 2”

You can just make spacers to limit the bump to say 1", so it'd only be in play for 2-3" of the last travel or whatever the actual number would be. Camburg does a slapper arm setup for these Tacomas now which makes the ratios closer together, pretty neat.

Can you setup the pressure high enough in the bumps then I assume to only use 1” to effectively bump the travel of the a arm if it is spaced out?

I feel like the travel would end up really stiff for the whole 1” of available travel if it is set to compress a max of 1” but I can’t claim to fully understand hydro bumps.

It would be very stiff then if you only use half of the stroke via higher pressure. Gotta remember the front has a motion ratio. If the bump was mounted inline with the front coilover, it would roughly be half as soft as if it mounted on the rear end of the truck, where the motion ratio for hydros in the rear is 1 to 1.

In the front, it depends on how far out the bump is mounted. 1" of stroke at the bump could be 2-4" at the tire

I was thinking more in relation to have the bump stop appropriately stop the suspension from compressing too far the hydro bump would have to be at very high pressures since it would still have an inch of shaft travel left.

This would hit really hard when you first touch the bump. Since they are progressive (I think) it would only be using the first half of this graph so it wouldn’t be a smooth ramp, rather a big jump when you first hit the bump then a slow rise.

The idea is that with correct valving and pressure in the bumps, I can still get full travel out of the suspension while retaining full bump and bump stop usability at speed. I'm also running very soft springs compared to most people are running.

If I have to, I can shorten the bump to 1" of travel which would help for crawling, but definitely would hurt fast speeds.

Well. Wish I had better news. Front end is painted and ready for reassembly. Haven't been able to get in the garage lately since I'm currently recovering from Covid right now. Probably won't be in the garage for a few weeks.

On the brightside, the engine went into Main Machine. I still need to drop off parts for the rebuild since they're going to do a full rebuild minus accessories.

Thats too bad about covid. It’s just a matter of time for everyone. I hope you feel too shitty and have a full recovery real fast!
Still sounds like good progress. It’s gonna be a beast when it’s done!

I'm back to work already so I'm definitely feeling better, just got to take a little time off from the truck so I don't over do it for right now.

Covid hit me pretty hard a week ago, bounce back seemed quick other than being pretty tired at the end of the day. So I’m sure you are feeling that too. Probably a smart idea not to push it too hard.

All good. That's what I figured.

That's good to hear. That's been me for the most part. First 2/3 days were super rough, and then now it's just a slowish bounce back.

Well it's been a minute since I last posted about the truck. Finally feeling back to normal after Covid so the last few days it's been full steam ahead to get the truck back together.

As of now, the long travel install is done.

Still a few minor things to do before the front is completely done, but I'll order everything tonight for it. Next up is going to be the brakes so I can just have that done with before moving on to the rear suspension and axle swap.

In other news, my motor is at the machine shop and everything to rebuild it is on order as well. Super excited that parts were available for it and I don't have to hurry up and wait for parts to become available.

Started digging into the brakes today. Got the ABS unit, old brakes lines, and stock master and booster out. New T100 booster and 1 1/16" master cylinder are in, along with a few new brake lines. Going to have to modify one of the brake lines I have to work better for the driver front line, but I also have to make a few brake lines, but that'll be this weekends project.
