    Yeah
I’ll get the head off next but I’m not expecting to be able to save this thing when the pan looks like that.
Looking more and more like it’s gonna end up an LS Tacoma.
    Fuck

You wanna climb rocks: get a Jeep

You want a plush ride with a car like interior: get a Ridgeline

You want something in between that does a little of everything and will last for 300K miles: than you want a Tacoma

Coming from a handful of wheelers on Tons/42s, my Tacoma is pretty hilarious to wheel and I'm slowly getting rid of/fixing all the factory junk. Probably going to straight axle it in the next year or two

Otherwise catch can related, I have not been able to get my truck to smoke, and have almost flopped it a couple times and have had it every which way in the air.

    So just to recap...

    1. Catch cans are to blame and once again are proven more harm than good.
    2. TacomaWorld tangents are guaranteed to be at least as detrimental to your well-being as catch cans.
    3. The shooter on the grassy knoll was in fact working for the CIA, who, you guessed it, are to blame for developing catch can technology.

I have friends that enjoy crawling and without exception they trailer their purpose built crawler to the trail. Sure, they are street legal but they are not built for the street.
Without exception I have never witnessed a truck that is as good on the interstate as it is in the rocks or vice versa.

See I'm nothing short of amazed you of all people have NOT had the smoking issue.

If I go out before I move again I'll take a video it was on some pretty mellow stuff.

Like I've seriously tried by standing it straight up and down things, sideways, etc. Heck, I saw a tacoma on instagram smoking on hells revenge and thats not even that steep, theres steeper hills in Tacoma/Seattle on the street than that.
Kinda baffles me, as most of the more built 3rd gens have the smoking problem/do the catch can to slow it.

I don’t see the majority of built 3rd gen owners reporting this, just a vocal minority(and rightly so, I’d be making a fuss if mine did that).

I wonder if in some cases the oil is overfilled because the stupid dipstick is impossible to read? If it’s a bit overfilled it likely is within the range they designed it for on the street so it won’t cause a problem but it’d bring the safe angle down a bit.

I'm familiar I lived in the area for about 20 years. I do not have a crazy built tacoma but it smokes often. I've been back and forth on it as I've seen people hydro the engine from NOT having a catch can too.

I did see a company that has a second catch can that claims to fix the potential issue. At this rate may as well have an oil pressure system (can't remember the name of the system) to same on the smoking and return line issues

I more or less just a majority of most decked out Tacomas have a catch can, not that they were the only ones with the problem.

    Dude that really sucks :/

If you’re serious about a V8 swap I’d look into the 4.6 from the GX460/Prado. Could be a lot more straightforward, gx460 shares the platform with the 4Runner and the 1gr block is pretty much the same as the 2gr so might be a lot of cross compatibility there.

Also OP, if you're thinking of swapping an LS in be ready to ditch literally everything sensor/electrical wise on the truck. Something that I wish I could do on my 3rd gen so I can swap whatever axles in and not have a single abs wire turn the truck into a useless 2wd truck.
Thats another thing, basically have to ditch every single electrical component/sensor and run a standalone LS setup unless you do something more alike.

Exactly, the 4.6 might even share all the electrical connections.

If it were me I’d even entertain a turbo diesel from the hilux. They share both the auto and manual transmissions from the Tacoma so there’s one less thing to worry about and if you look at a picture all the interior electronics will look awful familiar, good chance they kept as much of the important chassis electrics the same so it could just work

I know several jeep models have the exact same problem that destroyed the ops engine.

    Yeah
I’m looking at LS swap mainly cause it’s cheap. Yes I know I’ll loose all electronics, have a stand alone gauge cluster, have to take over control of the ADD (already have control of locker) and loose just about everything else but it’s what I know, done it on harder platforms than this will be before, atleast there’s room to work in the Tacoma engine bay.

I’d entertain the idea of a Toyota swap if the Toyota 6MT could be retained and it wasn’t much more than the LS swap will set me back. I’ll have about 2k getting the LS installed and running and another couple grand adding functionality back (gauges and integration into the body as much as possible). All in all the truck will drive down the road Chevy powered for less than a junk yard 2GR, that’s 100% my thinking on the swap in the first place.

Plus I’m already setup with EFILive hardware & software licensing and even have an open VIN license waiting.

I don’t follow. It clearly says “Off-Road” in gigantic letters right there on the god damn side of it.

Heck yeah, sounds like you know your stuff!
Could probably hit up @tacotunner06 , has an Ls in his 2nd gen. Not sure if he'd have any tips on what he did, but worth a shot.
