Tomato tamatoh. The quality of the education is the answer, yes. And if a nation provides a public school system, the citizens should demand that the school system be equitable across the country.

Everybody likes to rag on Cali, but they have some fantastic public schools. They also have some of the worst.

 

It's systemic. It's the way it's always been, so there's no incentive to change it if you're rich, and no ability to change it if you're poor.

You're right, not everyone can be top 25%.

What we have done in the US, instead, is make sure the bottom 25% have it better than kings did two centuries ago.

The wealthiest people in the world at that time never had a car as good as a used 2012 civic. They could never go to the store and buy avocados out of season, or fish not native to their area.

So yes, "best" is not attainable for everyone, but "better than ever before" certainly is.

Medieval peasants had more free time than the average blue collar worker does now. Sure they might have had to eat bread and root vegetables for every meal, and poop on the sidewalk, but they didn't sit at a desk for 10 hours a day staring into a glowing screen.

Quality of life is multi-faceted and definitely not a one size fits all metric.

 

I've never advocated for running anybody's life. I'm advocating for free access to exceptional public education, which you would assume the wealthiest nation on earth should be able to provide to the people that are going to be taking care of them in their old age.

 

The data don't back this at all.

As we have discussed, people tend to start life as poor worker bees and end it rich. The same people don't stay in the same socio-economic zones by and large.

Consider your own life: Are you in the same economic state you were 20 years ago?

My theory on this is that the internet and media have everyone comparing themselves to the upper crust rather than their personal goals. And comparison is the thief of joy.

I have no doubt you could fund a mideval peasant level lifestyle - clothing, hut, medical "care", food, etc. - on less than 10hr work a week.

You are unwilling to accept that quality of life. That is why you work more.

I spend my weekends specifically seeking that quality of life. But it's also nice to come home and have a hot shower.
