Not sure what the tune does, but if my truck had a larger tolerance on the cruise control the shifting would be much more pleasant Its like it wants to hold an exact speed set by the user and if down shifting don't bring it back fast enough it shifts down again. If it would hold speed to say within 3 mph + or - it would be a smoother ride

The 3G Tacoma actually has 1 fewer ecu module than the outgoing 2G taco. It’s all centralized now. If you can find 15 computers under you hood or behind you dash, let me know.

Rest assured, the only thing improving on planet Earth is the reliability of all cars. When was the last time you saw a rusted-out car, one with it’s hood up on the side the road, or even one with a burned-out headlight? When was the last time you even got a flat tire?

Although it seems counterintuitive, the digital age and modern manufacturing has improved the quality and reliability of vehicles many times over. I’ve never known anyone with an ECU failure, however I’ve know many whose previous generation vehicles developed vacuum leaks, automatic choke problems, carburetor issues, and throttle cable issues etc.

The more digital our vehicles become, the less problems they present.

This. Modern vehicles have so many fail-safes and parameters that are electronically controlled. People tend to think electronics are bad and means less reliable. However, a computer is much more reliable than mechanical solutions, so long it is programmed properly and thoroughly tested. Heck, even my Range Rover from 2014 has had no electrical issues except for a burnt-out headlight bulb. Even the air suspension is still holding after 110,000km of Canadian summers and winters. ECU's would probably be the last component on a vehicle to fail, given the brute force low-level language that they're often coded in, which makes them often hard to understand and crack, but extremely reliable.

I have been "blessed" (read cursed but had to replace the F150 and didn't have much of a choice of Tacomas) to get the dead-brained advanced auto-braking, so called smart cruise control. Another thing I liked about my F150. Plain, simple, dumb, trust the driver knows what he's doing cruise control. I despise so called advanced cruise control and the constant 2nd guessing it does.

<soapbox>Toyota, would it really be that hard to add a setting to dumb down the cruise control for those of us who know how to drive a car and don't need the training wheels? </soapbox>

The first time I used it on the interstate, I was attempting to pass a slow moving vehicle, and my truck was braking. Last and only time I will use it. Very dangerous at times.

Same experience here. Best I've found is to set the distance it will come up to a car before it brakes to the shortest range and be prepared to take over if I need to. But it's smart enough to calculate the speed differences and apply the brakes sooner if the speed differences are greater. And I totally agree that it can be very dangerous for a driver not expecting the vehicle to do that. And, frankly, I think other drivers try to bully cars with advanced cruise control so they can get in front only adding more danger to the situation.

btw: the bullying of cars with advanced cruise control is a concern of car manufacturers trying to get self driving working as self drivers would try to avoid accidents just as advanced cruise control tries to avoid accidents today.

Press and hold the cruise control toggle button on the end of the stalk when you turn it on and you get old school cruise control.

How long do you need to hold it? or does it display some kind of indicator for good ol' cruise control?

Found the answer in another thread on our site. Hold until the radar message goes out then back to simple, dumb cruise control.

The icon changes, it's the icon of just the speedometer, not the one with the speedo and the car.

    About 3 seconds.

the adaptive cruise works fine for me on the interstate, only gripe is on 2 lane highways when the vehicle in front turns right, instead anticipating that it will be out of the way by the time you get to the spot where they turned, it brakes. Just need to pay attention and hit coast when that situation occurs. Sure it isn’t perfect, but neither am I. :)

I'm up in the rusty northeast, no shortage of late model cars, or rusted out trucks on the roads here. As far as flats, none since being retired for 5 years, a few before that though. I've always had toyota trucks since the 70's....they all were reliable, just rusted out before its time.

It can't downshift if you never let it upshift. ECT and S4.
