How can one tell if my torque converter is starting to go out? Any "noises" to listen for?
My 06 Tacoma automatic at 168,000 miles is starting to sound like a cross between an air popcorn popper and a washing machine at idle.

A failed torque converter isn't going to make any noise, the most common torque converter related problem is a "rumble strip" vibration in the 40-60 mph range.
If your hearing a noise at idle it isn't the torque converter unless the bolts holding it to the flex plate are loose or the flex plate itself is cracked.
If you have the 4.0L V6 it's an inherently noisy engine, but if you think you hear a new noise or it's getting louder there may be an issue that needs to be addressed.
If you could take a short video of said noise, post it on youtube (or other video sharing service), and post a link to it here I'm sure the members here can tell you if it's normal or not.
