Oil change disaster advice needed

True..or perhaps it's because those jobs are the most often done and people just slack off. Kinda like the saying about most accidents within a few miles of home.

Much truth of course. I mentioned earlier here that even though the dealer rep and I both knew the specs on the frame rot hole size and a quick glance would show mine was way over it, they technically couldn't do it without the corporate thumbs up on the pictures.

 

Toyota is famous for using the same part on different vehicles. This filter housing is one of those parts. It cuts down on production parts needed and helps with parts inventory both at the factory and at the local dealership.

 

Does that part number replace the plastic oil filter housing on your 2021 Tacoma? According to Toyota parts it doesn't match when I checked.

 

it won't match because the "right one" is the plastic one, it will fit and work right.

yes it fits, I put one on a 2017 Tacoma and 2018 4runner, and have one on its way for the 22 runner.

 

I have to admit, I was surprised by the cost of things. Back in the days of $20 oil changes, doing it myself made little sense. Any 15 minute bay could do it for cheaper and faster than I could, and I could hang out and watch to make sure they did it right.

Now its hard to find a service that will do it for under a benjamin, and that's if you go to the places that have a 2 hour wait. The 15 minute place charged me a buck-twenty for just oil, then had the balls to threaten to fail my state inspection unless I buy wipers on the spot. (I told them to hang on a sec, walked across the street, walked back with a set of autozone wipers, and said "gimme my sticker and button 'er up, I'm done with this fuckery."

That same benjamin just bought a wrench, a HF drain container, 6 quarts of 0W-20, two Toyota filters, and a fumoto valve. The next oil change will probably buy the metal housing and still save me a crapload of both money and time. Now I just need to find an honest inspection service.

 

The dealership will fix whatever their mistake caused to break. I had this happen once in a forester, dealership didnt put the oil cap on, it was just sitting under the hood on top of the battery. I drove it the next day on a trip and it broke down 100mi from home, knocking and starved of oil. they replaced the shortblock, no questions asked. I expect your dealership will do the same. You dont need to worry about anything.

You will not get a new truck. You didnt have a new truck when they did the work on it, you dont deserve a new one from them because the work went wrong. You do deserve that they fix the problem, and they will.

A great piece of advice was to trade it in afterwards, go trade it in and get a new truck, preferably something with a better engine than the 3.5L haha. A 2021 with 7k miles is going to trade in for 44k, which is less than you paid for your truck. so in a sense, you can get a replacement truck since new TRD Sport/OR trucks are still ~40k msrp.

Stall charges/includes tool use and is $6/hr. I just have to buy materials for the oil change.

Here's my recent oil change/tire rotation on my wife's 2017 Elantra last month--50 minutes from start to finish. The easiest oil change!

 

Yep... having your oil changed by a lube place is pretty much playing a game of russian roulette... you might get a good oil change, and you might not.

 

For years I changed my own oil because I geeked out and wanted to. Then I saw the value in paying someone else. This was when it was about $20 if I supplied my own oil and filter. I liked bringing my own-it still gave me the satisfaction of knowing what went in there (though recent experience with Blackstone tells me it likely doesn't matter!). Seemed worth it to me just to not have to deal with disposing the old oil.

Prices started going up. Yes, hard to find it less than $100. Thinking of going back to DIY.

I did have good experience with Jiffy Lube if I supplied my own and was polite and watched them and went when it was quiet and not rushed. But strangely the $35 'manager special' no longer applied to me since I supplied my own. They want to charge $80. No thanks. They said the manager special only applies if you use their oil and filter even though it is less profitable for them.

I did find a Valvoline who is $40+ my supplies. Last time I was there though the tech didn't turn the oil bottles back upright after they were empty and spilled drops of oil everywhere. Easy to clean but still careless.

That may be true but since there are numerous occasions where people fuck up oil changes, both at home but mostly at incompetent dealerships because of their crappy housing, they should consider changing their housing out for a mount that would accept a spin on filter like most other manufacturers.

Toyota has gone back to spin-on's with the dynamic force engines used with all the TNGA platforms.

 

Actually there is nothing wrong with the filter housing, it just needs to be torqued correctly and it comes off very easily every time. Of course you need to own and use a torque wrench to do that though.

No need. It's an oring seal. Turn the housing until it hits the flange. Done. BUT you should have a decent torque wrench
