Hey Everybody, my Tacoma with 116K miles is throwing codes P2440 & P2442 which is for issues at Secondary Injection Pump Banks 1 & 2. Looks like it is a common problem on Tacomas & Tundras. I am getting the CEL along with the "Trac Off" light and the truck goes into limp mode which is borderline dangerous. I've sucessfully cleared the codes twice now and the truck goes back to normal for awhile but the issue has come back each time. So it looks like I need to replace the part. Just to be sure, I need to replace this part called the Secondary Air Injection Pump Check Valve:

Not this part called the Secondary Air Pump:

Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

There was a customer satisfaction program/extended warranty for secondary air injection system components on 2012 model 4.0l trucks, you may want to check and see if your truck is still eligible before fixing it yourself.

@Redroc Hope your replacement went smoothly and still error code free. I wanted to chime in and add that replacing is the rout owners want to go to resolve these error codes make sure to use Factory/OEM components. Aftermarket parts are cheap for a reason and will cost you more in the long run when the codes trip again. Another alternative the Bypass Kit this not only addresses fault codes but prevents them from tripping again in the future. If you had any questions do not hesitate to contact us.

Just a follow up on this... Toyota did agree to repair my truck at no cost under Recall 20TC01. The Check Valve Assembly was replaced, a new additional cover was added over the Air Pump, and some metal tubing was replaced along with some miscellaneous small parts. The kicker though, my truck was dropped at the dealership on 5/13/22 and I didn't get it back until 10/13/22. The parts for the recall were backordered or so I was told. I later learned this was not true. All of the parts to make the repair were available individually but for the recall repair all of the parts are combined under a single part number. The single part number was backordered. A savvy parts person could have assembled all the parts needed and I could have had my truck back in a few days.

I did get to do a light duty multi-thousand mile test on a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road DCLB. The newer lighting and electronics were nice but I much preferred the engine and ride of my 2012 with 117K on it.
