I'd point you towards some Highlander forums or other Toyota makes with aluminum housings, but it probably wouldn't change your mind. And I don't mean that in an arguable way, I mean even though it happens, it won't be enough to turn the average person (you or me) away.

You've galled this housing or seen others do it?

Just picking a post to reply to here with a thought. I think the underlying problem with the housing is, there are no instructions anywhere to lubricate that new o-ring. Am I correct? What I do is 1.) lubricate that o-ring while in the housing, and 2.) lubricate the inside walls of what the housing screws into (Mounting, engine, whatever it's called). I imagined a twisted 0-ring from first day I changed my own oil in this 2020 Tacoma, it's just logical, if that o-ring goes in dry in my opinion I think that o-ring could get bunched up or pinched during install.

Most of the filter kits come with install instructions, on the topic of lubrication there should be plenty of residual oil inside the housing. You should still lubricate the o ring with new oil, but unless you cleaned the housing out with solvent and an air gun its not going to be dry when it goes in even if you forget. Not twisting the o ring is good and I think this is were most people would mess up.

I'd like OP to weigh-in and let us know if he's seen his truck yet. I'd especially like to know if it looks like it has a drain plug in it or, if it does, does it look new? I still am suspicious about the convenient nick on the o-ring. If OP see's the engine and believes it is the old plug I'll be a believer in the o-ring thingamadingy.

I've got a question. Let's assume the oil change was executed perfectly but the supplied/new o-ring was defective with a nick in it. Let's also assume that the nick was such it is reasonable for someone not to notice it. What would everyone's expectations be then? Would we all be thinking the dealer alone should make it right or do we believe it is a warranty issue from Toyota because their oil filter was defective? The reason I ask is that if we begin leaning toward Toyota why would the dealer be the one coming up with the solution rather than Toyota. Because the solution seems to be coming from the dealer I lean more to side that implicates their culpability rather than the filter manufacturer.

You would somehow need to prove the part was defective preinstall, Toyota would certainly deny it was otherwise and blame the installer.

    Yeah.
It doesn't matter. Part of the procedure is running the truck and checking for leaks. They didn't do that.

Anyone that uses an impact gun on an oil filter canister is beyond the 3% threshold and is a moron.
