What would you consider a "minimalist" lighting setup?

Something above the minimum DOT required hi/lo beams, but not so many that your whole front bumper is filled with lights and your wallet empty.

Can a single pod light work to fulfill the role of fog and flood lights?

End goal is to have more lighting capability, but without redundancies.

Depending on the vehicle there are bulb/wiring harness upgrades that can result in significant performance increases from the existing headlamps. The fog lamps most vehicles come with are usually more akin to toys than actual fog lamps. Most drivers would benefit from not turning their fogs on at all under normal nighttime driving conditions, as the extra light near the vehicle can, despite making it seem easier to see, constrict the pupils reducing ditance vision significantly.

If you have a first gen, look up Crashnburn80's 1st gen build thread. He has some excellent comparisons in performance between old/hazed OEM and new OEM headlamps with some various bulbs. The 2nd gen H4/9003 upgrade thread would also be a good thread to read through. While the 1st gens lamps are smaller, you can still expect similar performance increases from the various high performance/"+Focus" rated stock wattage bulbs, especially when paired with a relay harness. A relay harness also makes it easier to wire in relays for auxiliary lights cleanly.

Evaulate your use case for extra lighting after that. Do you do a lot of night driving? Auxiliary highbeams may be a good choice, and there's a stickied thread full of comparisons and test data right at the top of this sub-forum. Diode dynamics, Cibie, PIAA/Valeo (which also owns Cibie now), some Hella lamps, KC Daylighter LED, etc.

I guess it really depends how you use the truck. I have the diode dynamic SS3 fogs in the front and the Meso total tails stage 1 in the rear. I also did a LED tag light upgrade.

I don’t feel like I need any other lights at the moment but I may add ditch lights down the road as I do more remote trips. I wouldn’t add any more than that.

Look into the SS3 Sport and SS3 Pro fog light kits from Diode Dynamics. The sports have a tighter beam pattern whereas the pro's shine a little taller. That might be what you're looking for.

Your goals really depict what our answers will be. What year Tacoma and what are the goals (ie on road, high or low speed offroad)?

If it's simply additional lighting for the street and backroads. Then a set of SS3 fog lights in the factory location with a "fog light anytime" mod would work well so when you flip the high beams on, the fog lights remain on. The next thing is improving your headlights. Whether that's with new housings that aren't faded or upgrading the bulb and wiring harness.

Now if it's off road... It will depend on if you are trying to get maximum range for high speed dunes or a good spread for low speed technical stuff. There are lights that are adjustable on the fly for spot and flood (not fog light use though) but they are extremely expensive.
