The SKINNY on skinny tires

No luck searching this thread or TW - thinking about swapping the stock 16x7 +30/1.25" Spidertrax combo for some old Eagle Series 102s in 16x8 -20 so I can ditch the spacers. Tire fitment calculator says they'll end up about 32mm further out. Anyone have experience with -20 offsets with pizza cutters?

 

Skinnies are fine on stock wheels, don't add offset unless you're willing to cut. Those are 33s so your speedo and everything will be off by whatever percentage, I just assume I'm going 5mph faster than I am

 

Those 35 Kenda's wil be my next tire. Currently on 33x10.5 Kenda's and I have definitely been impressed with them. Post up some pics when you get them installed!

 

Should be fine besides the basic cmc and firewall pound. I run around -44mm offset with 9" wide wheels, photo for how far out from the spindle they are lol

 

Most definitely will, I really like my coopers, wish they did a skinny 35.

 

Sweet shot. The goal for this is to run without chopping or hammering anywhere, so I might have to stick with a 0 offset since I've already confirmed fitment. Just trying to make use of a cheap set of wheels instead of breaking down and buying some FN or Motegis for my MTs since they'll see some trail abuse.

 

Like the idea but duct tape goes to shit in short time. Even electrical tape would be better.

 

I havent had any problems with doing it for the last 10 years. Probably have done it on a dozen set of wheels/tires, and everytime I've had to debead them its always been a lot tougher than without.

 

I am debating between Kenda Klever 35x10.5 and 255/80. Did anyone with the kenda need to regear? Are you getting into 6th gear on the highway?

Considering 255/70R18 tires over my stock 265/60R18’s … moves it to a 32.2” tire. Just finished installing my Bilstein 6112’s at full height, SPC UCAs and ICON RXT in the back. 2014 DCLB 4x4. Trying to avoiding any rubbing or cutting or re-gearing..your thoughts?

 

I got a chance to take the new 255/85R16 Geolandar MT 003s out. They were amazing. I feel like I’ve been lied to about load ratings. These E rated tires were far more comfortable than my C load Duratracs in 265/75R16. Don’t get me wrong I love the Duratracs but it felt like I was floating on a cloud when I aired down the Geolandars. Very happy with them. I am going to be hard pressed to switch to something else in the future.

 

I've been on stock gears and 35s for a year now. Its fine for me, as I'm used to way slower with less hp/bigger tires. Speedo is about 5-7mph off at 60-70mph. I'll get into 6th above ~70mph gps speed

 

I think this highly depends on your location and use case. If your name is any indication you'll be on mostly flat roads at sea level. That's probably the only case where I'd consider not regearing. I was actually somewhat disappointed in the value of my 5.29s, but I wouldn't have ever gone to 33s without having them. Here in Utah I was constantly shifting down to 4th or even 3rd on 265/75R16.

 

That’s strange.. I’ve driven Pikes Peek in CO with stock 265/60r18’s and had no issues…rarely downshifting to 4th. Maybe I’m missing something… if so apologies.

 

No apologies necessary. I don't know what major differences we're talking about, but speed is going to be a big one. I couldn't drive on I-80 going 75mph without downshifting constantly. In fact, it got to the point where I forced it into S5 for anything over 70mph. A slight headwind or slight incline (1-2%) at that speed and it would often even jump down to 4th. Now that I'm on 5.29s that doesn't happen, but it does still drop to 5th sometimes.

 

One of the differences is @codemancer has a 3rd gen which is notorious for gear hunting and I think @NmapFE has a 2nd gen which is pretty good at hills (I've driven both).

 

Has anyone placed a backorder with tirerack for Cooper Maxx 255/85r16's actually get their order fulfilled even though the website date just keeps getting pushed back? If so how long was the actual wait? The date on my order just keeps moving later and later like once a day.

 

With the Geolandars which seem pretty true to the 33" size, I would only get rubbing on the driver's side on compression with a slight left hand turn, even without mudflaps. A trip to a good alignment shop that would work with the SPCs fixed that. Then swapped to the Bilstein HD springs, moved the upper ball joint from position D to position E to give more clearance and make it easier for the alignment tech, and got it realigned again with no rubbing. I'd say you're alright with a 32" tire, possibly without much work from the shop. Always troublesome when you show up with an extra adjustment point, tends to confuse people.
