After reading about NASA and the Government basically clearing Toyota in the unintended acceleration debacle I’ve come to the following.
America needs to completely overhaul the expectation of drivers! People need to be held accountable for their actions behind the wheel. Vehicles need to digress from the electronic babysitting, stability control, heated seats, DVD playing, 20+ cup holders, split climate control extensions of our houses. The way drivers are licensed needs to be completely overhauled!
Here’s my suggestion.

Minimum age eligibility raised from 16 to 18.

Mandatory driver training on vehicle control at the cost to the driver. To include a rally course, skid pad and evasive maneuvering

Mandatory test on the operation and controls of your vehicle.

DUI’s: First offense will result in mandatory loss of license for 5 years and 30 days jail time. Second offense will result in loss of license for 15 years and 90 days mandatory jail time. Third offense will result in permanent loss of license and 1 year in jail.

If you don’t agree with me that’s fine. My opinion is that people need to take driving seriously instead of thinking of it as a chore. People need to learn the rules of the road, abide by the rules of the road, know the limits and functions of their vehicles and finally be DEFENSIVE drivers!

Except for the fact that the drunk driver always walks away, and the innocent is killed or heading to the hospital.

Most of this stuff will never work. The main problem behind all of this is that society as a whole is getting stupider. Driving well isn't difficult. You dont need to spend 19791735 hours in a class room and 91759175971597 hours with a trained driving instructor (lol) to understand how to drive properly.

What about letting someone get a license at 16 only if he has an "A" grade- point average in high school. Maybe this would give young people an incentive to do better in school.

In BC we have a graduated licence system for new drivers .
