I'll certainly take a look, I can't promise I'll be able to tell you anything definitive.

Put the backpressure tester back in the exhaust and have a buddy power brake it while you watch the gauge

Denso is the OE manufacturer but part numbers are vehicle and position specific, I wouldn't start replacing parts until it's figured out what's likely bad.

Just saw the edit in post 1 about a noise and vibration

If we're sticking with the theory of clogged converters that noise could be an exhaust leak trying to get around the blockage

Maybe try the back pressure test again? Can you lengthen the hose so you can drive and hold the gauge out the window? Drive around and go up some hills

For the later 2nd Gen N/A Trucks, the KCLV will default to 14 (unless otherwise configured). Earlier N/A trucks will have it set default to 21.

A KCLV on a 2nd Gen will not usually ever get up to 27. If you're running 86/87 Octane you'll find they'll typically be 16-12 (positive).

KFB is default to -3. Anything < than that is "bad" and > is "good".

Think of KCLV as a long term knock trim that is trimmed by KFB. KCLV doesn't respond to knock directly. IF your KFB goes below -3 (along with other conditions being met), KCLV can and will learn down in 0.22 increments to compensate. There are 3 RPM zones for KCLV on the 2nd Gen and each zone has it's own independent KCLV value giving the ECU the ability to target it's knock correction independent of the other zones.

Thank you both for the explanation. I knew there was likely a provision of some type to limit knock.
And until now, I never knew how it “worked”. I have a “general” idea now. Thanks to both of you.

    Thanks again.

For anyone else that is half interested in the KCLV, KFB, and ignition timing. I found this interesting. It’s about the only thing I found in the 1GR.

I don’t know why, but I’m the type that likes to learn about this stuff. Can’t say I like working on stuff. I missed a good chance to be an engineer. I design it, you build it, and fix it.

Lots of good info in there, however some of it is not exactly accurate. The patents referenced are for a different Toyota platform and while some of the technical data is correct, it's not 100% accurate for this (and the FJ) platform.

It takes a little digging but the Tacoma info is out there for those really hungry for it :)

I see, until OP posted his data. I can honestly say, I hadn’t ever heard of KCLV and KFB.
While I am interested in the workings, I can’t say I’m too motivated to “really” want to understand it.

I am the type that goes with, “If it ain’t broke”……
    I haven’t had a broken KCLV or KFB….:rofl:So I don’t have a need to “mess with it”.
I’ll gladly let you tuner guys figure that one out

lokinmg at my log and watching KFB it generally stays at -3 but saw multiple time it changed -4.3, -5.8, -7.2 are a couple numbers it jumped to for a split second then returned to -3

KCLV stayed at 14.3 the entire time.

That's pretty typical for running 86/87 Octane on the stock calibration. Toyota was pretty aggressive with the ignition timing in some areas and in my opinion is over advanced. That shows in the KFB values you saw especially the stuff in the <-5 range. That's pretty high knock feedback values.

You sure it's one of mine? Who flashed you/when was it? I don’t have any record of your username in my PMs. Or in my client database.

Send me an email at info@overlandtailor.com with your logs and tune file. I'll gladly take a look. If it's one of ours/mine I can further back off the ignition advance a little if needed.

You have to put it in a zip file, in Windows right click the file > send to > compressed (zipped) folder and upload that file.
