Can someone describe the difference between pinging and ticking? I think I have ticking (which I think is normal) but I want to make sure

The ignition timing is computer controlled. If the knock sensor is working correctly it'll alert the ecm to the pre-ignition long before your ears pick it up.

If the knock sensor wasn't working correctly you'd have a check engine light

    Holy necrothread lol

Isn't there a TSB out for this issue? I thought it was specific to 2014 Tacoma's.

Yes, and some report that the TSB did nothing, others say it made things worse, and some say it helped. Take your pick. I have the pinging on my '14 and fear if doing the TSB worsens the problem that the dealer will not reflash back to the factory settings.

    It applies to 2012-2014
And is covered for 96 months or 80k miles.

Those that want it, should probably start making arrangements now. Time is running out.

I don’t have this issue with my 2013 for the short amount of time I have had it, but I’m wondering if anyone has tried to use plugs that are one step ‘colder’.

For those that don’t know, and I’m sure many of you already do.. spark plugs have heat ranges that specify how much heat they pull out of the cylinder… a ‘colder’ plug will pull more heat out.. I don’t know if it would work or not but I would personally give it a try to find out.

It is around $2.98 on 87 octane gas in Costco here in Houston.

I put IKH22 spark plugs in my Tacoma and they helped with the pinging a little bit not much...
