Alrighty, so I took a hiatus after doing my last little nosing project as the next step is building a stair case -- I needed a break. After struggling with factory nosing ($80 / 6 ft) I decided I'll just build my own. Back when I did my smaller sunken living room project the nosing from the factory was warped and I had to re-order 4 different times. With my staircase build, I would have to order 12 nosings. Given the defect rate I would virtually need to order 40 nosings and pick the 12 good ones. I'm not about to do that. No to mention that's about $1,000 for 12.

I have an off cut of the nosing from my last project and about 6 boxes of my flooring left from my living and dining room. Since the staircase is going to be made out of that flooring, why can't I hijack a few boards and mill them down?

I took my factory nosing and set my fence to the exact width of it:
    IMG_6757.HEIC.jpg

Took a test board from my firewood pile (hickory burns hot as shit, btw) and ripped it with the groove side facing the fence. This is important as it'll save me a step not having to dado a groove in the back of the board like I did in my living room.

Since the boards (and factory nosing!) are 3/4", I figured I could just take a 3/8" roundover bit and run it along both sides of my new board. It should theoretically make a perfect bullnose if I dial the router in correctly. I didn't skimp since I'm going to be making a bunch of this stuff, so I got a Whiteside 3/8" radius 1/2" shank bit. Whiteside bits are super beef:

I set up a little ghetto router station. My shop isn't set up at all; I still have to pour concrete and run electrical so here's my super advanced ultra premium work bench a la my dad's 40 year old saw horses and some OSB:
    IMG_6761.HEIC.jpg

The OF1400 is pretty tough to hold when doing edge work. I sanded my edge with some 220 to make a nice smooth transition and get rid of any chatter:

Our flooring is kind of a special order matte finish, so I ended up using some MinWax matte spray for hardwood flooring. I wanted to use Rubio, but I don't think it's worth it here. I hit the edge hard and feathered it back onto the finished face. Needless to say, I think I just saved $1,000 using spare floor boards. Here's the finished product next to my factory off-cut.

Now to repeat this about 30 times

    A bunch..and no build thread!
Very nice! My milling machines have knife sets for nosing, we've used them a few times over the years.

Got a broken roof tile needs replacing. It's the top course under the ridge tiles and some maleable adhesive flashing. Can't pry it up without tearing.

Anyone know what this is called so I can buy some?

Has a somewhat lead-feel to it. Maybe zinc? It's pretty thin and crazy sticky on the reverse.

Started removing shitty mdf laminate so I can eventually refinish the floors. All the blue underlayment you see is where is stuck to the floor from dog/cat urine. The previous "occupants" didn't really give 2 shits about things.

Even if I put laminate back down, this had to come up because of how warped it was from urine.
