Recently my reverse camera on my 2010 Tacoma stopped showing up on my rear view mirror. So I take my truck in for the exhaust recall and ask them to trouble shoot the camera problem while they have it. They informed me the problem was the camera itself. The problem is you must replace the camera and handle as one assembly! I think to the tune of I think like $847 dollars. So I declined to have them fix it. I located a new camera by itself on eBay from a company with good feedback for $119 supposibly brand new. I disc the battery then install the new camera, pretty straight forward. The problem is I still just get the blue screen on my rear view mirror. It acts like it is trying to connect but isn't. After a few seconds the blue screen disappears then just goes back to a regular rear view mirror. So after $75 dollars that the dealership charged for troubleshooting the problem and the camera cost I'm out almost $200 and the problem still isn't fixed. Anyone have any ideas?

How are you sure the new camera is working?

I'm not completely sure! I'm looking for direction. I don't know someone with this year Tacoma to try either camera on. I was hoping maybe a tech might be on here and possibly head me in the right direction.

Since my '13 was prewired, but had neither the camera or the mirror, I added both. I found and installed the mirror first and with no camera it behaved just as you describe.

I also sourced an eBay camera at $115 ( a bit tricky to find the one with the correct connection) hooked it up, worked great the first time. My camera was new OE.

As you've found, the dealer is full 'o pooh. Both on price and 'handle together'.

I'd be checking the wiring connections. There is a quick disconnect that allows tailgate removal, and may be another not far under the bed. Maybe one of those is loose or damaged.

Well I found the quick disconnect under the back by the bumper. Doesn't appear to be anything wrong with that connection or connection at the camera. Any suggestions?

When I put it in reverse it looks kind of black for a split second then the screen turns blue then goes back to a normal rearview in just a few seconds.

I'd try to find someone local with a working system. Put your cameras (both) in the their truck and see if the cameras are good.

If they are, then you have a wiring problem to tackle.

If they are not, try putting their good camera in your truck. If it works, you know you have a camera issue.

I'm sure there are much more sophisticated ways to test this stuff, but sometimes simple is better.

    Was the eBay camera OEM?

The OEM cameras are 6 volts, whereas aftermarket cameras are 12 volts. Your eBay camera may not be given enough volts for it to work.

first thing to check for would be 6 volts at the tailgate connector when the truck is in reverse(just don't start the truck, and set the parking brake!)
