Injectors in self cleaning mode? I heard similar the other day. It should go away fairly quick. Or not!

I don't know man! Sounds like valve chatter to me. Hopefully our local SME's will chime in with more info.

Might be worth taking in though since under warranty for you. Might say it’s normal though but some people say it’s not normal. Aghhhhhh

it is the high pressure fuel pump near the rear of the engine on the passenger side. the noise is emanating
from it and the fuel rail exiting it along the passenger side and along the driver side but to a lesser degree.
you will find foam padding on the fuel rails to lessen the racket.
the high pressure fuel pump is a mechanical beast and clatters like crazy.
I don't think the noise is coming from the cam/follower, though.
ohyeah...it is normal (and apparently acceptable per Toyota).

Edit: some pics from service manual for your entertainment :): (really sucks this site does not do thumbnails)

That is what that shitty foam padding is for!?!? Never has there ever been an engine with this. When I saw this, I knew i was fucked....

Thanks for the detailed information. Will have my brother look at it since he’s a diesel mechanic before I take it into a big shop. almost had them tear apart engine to check the lifter. Did not take to Toyota bc they couldn’t even tell me what was wrong with my breaks. Took it somewhere else and fixed that fixed in an hour. Was rusty pins. Dealerships don’t care at all.

You have very little engine experience then... these foam pads have been used on all sorts of engines to reduce NVH for atleast 20 years. Nothing new...

Its weird because some 3.5 engines get louder than others making knocking noises as this. Both mine and a buddies 2019 trd are pretty quiet, yet a local water companies fleet of 3.5's are all over the lot with this noise....with some sounding like a diesel.

From my experience... Ford used them.. over aluminum valve covers on some of there FWD 4cyl engine. Also on some of their Lincoln brand engines.. another place I encountered them was on 3406e Caterpillar on road tractor engines.. they use a really thick one under the oil pan... it was nicknamed a diaper because when the rear seals leaked, they soaked it up making tham heavy and fun to work with..

So I just ran my engine cold and popped the hood to listen, then drive 28 kms and repeated with the engine at operating temperature. My engine with the hood popped makes a very similar noise as yours in the video.

This is the cleaning cycle. I find that it can be quiet or noisy depending on the needs of the engine. Nothing that I am concerned about...
