A generous amount of 0W-20 on threads will do the job. I also try to avoid power tools. It's not many threads, but high speed removal will create heat making things worse.

Anti-seize is great for the job but not worth contaminating your fresh oil.

I'll take my composite bed over aluminum any day. :cookiemonster:

But back to the filter housing, I'll look at the opposite statement. The weight savings between aluminum and composite is 14 grams. 0.5 ounces. I can shave the same amount of weight by removing 75 cents from my coin holder.

So was that line written by an engineer or a marketer? I'm guessing the latter. Because honestly who gives a shit what it weighs OR whether it can withstand Mongo and his channel-lock pliers, its a cheap 30 dollar part that does the job either way.

That is exactly how I read it. Instead of saying "cost cutting", they said "weight savings".

Now in reality, they are always looking for weight savings for cheaper production, shipping, etc. costs. So its not entirely a lie.... Still, I love the fact that the factory manual says the aluminum one is more durable :amen:

I think what they are implying is the plastic cap is not a throw-away item. It’s for extended use, not disposable, thus extending the life of the filter cap, for the environment. That’s honestly what I think the translators were trying to communicate.

Why, properly torqued and maintained, I still have zero issue with my factory filter housing, and like I stated previously, will only change it, if it fails.

Dozens of Toyota and Lexus models that have the cartridge oil filter have the same info, and have for years.. all from Toyota TIS. They all state the aluminum is for longevity, plastic is for weight (cost in reality). The 2016 Tacoma is the first that I have seen to state the plastic is for longevity.

I have no idea but I was using a standard socket and filter removal tool (aftermarket high quality). Tool was seated correctly. I could have probably gone in first with a breaker bar to help.

I was accessing through my skid plate cutout, so the socket was on a 6in extension. I could have been at a slight angle instead of dead center. The filter housing was definitely over torqued. My last oil change was at a Toyota dealership.

I got lucky I was already planning to replace the housing with the upgraded Toyota housing, so this ended up not being a catastrophic Sunday.

By pure chance a buddy also sold me his spare Toyota housing he never got around to upgrading his own truck with. So the day didn't turn out terrible when I finally got that failed housing off. This could have been a catastrophic Sunday though as the state requires dealerships to be closed on Sundays.

My last oil change was at a Toyota dealership. It took way more force to give than the oil pan drain plug. I have a skid plate so my only thing I can think of is when I was pulling with my all for it to give and I got off dead center causing an indirect torque. But holy crap was it on tight.
