Would you buy it? Slightly modded vs all stock

    Curious about something,
if you were in the market for a used tacoma offroad 4x4 3rd gen...would the truck having an arb summit front bumper (truck is stock otherwise) make you more or less likely to buy the truck?

Whether you were more or less likely then how much difference either over or under asking price would matter?

I always figured adding nearly 2k in functional parts would increase the worth buuuut that's only because I want those parts...so curious what the general feel is...I CAN always sell the bumper by itself after all, but once it's installed the OEM bumper is unusable as it has to be cut up so not installing it may open up more potential buyers.

I looked on carguru and in my area all the 3rd gens have similar asking prices given similar mileage but one was a bit below average and had a plate bumper and aftermarket skid plates and wheels (looked good, nothing crazy) and the truck otherwise looked to be in good condition...lower miles, no obvious abuse...but the asking price was lower.

So now I'm debating installing it :\

I know this is highly subjective and a limited audience but I'm just trying to get somewhat of a feel...thoughts?

Mods are for the owner's use and personalization, mods are not for increasing the resale value of a vehicle.

There's no telling what they did and where it was stuck. All you know is they got rid of it for some reason .

It all depends on if that bumper is something that mattered to you. Mods are typically worthless when it comes to resale. So it might make me more apt to buy the truck if I wanted the bumper but I wouldn't necessarily pay more for the truck due to the bumper, especially cause that bumper install is not easily removed to return the vehicle to stock. Although, what do I know? My truck is modified and not that returnable to stock.. if I was gonna sell, Id sell it as its built and ask quite a bit more for it than a stock one

^^ This. You don't know who did it and how it was done. Also, mods add no value to the vehicle for trade-in, and the only way you'd get any increased value at all is if you happened to find a private buyer who wanted the particular mods on your truck. That's why the majority of folks take mods off before trading and either put them on their new truck or sell them separately.

That all makes sense. I'll sell it alone or included on the side with the truck (if buyer wants) but yeah...better not install it then.

Thanks all! just needed to hear it from someone, or several, else XD

If I were buying a used vehicle, I don't want someone else's work on it. Like the comment above, there are too many half-wits with a set of wrenches out there. I think I would get a Carfax on it and see if it has any red flags. If I were looking for a used vehicle, I would be looking for something owned by an older person, dealer maintenanced, and stock as the day is long. Once you get into mods and a younger driver the chances increase the vehicle was used hard and not properly maintained. The last thing I would want to buy is something that looks like it's been prepped for Baja and was driven by some flat-biller who thinks he's the next BJ Baldwin.

I have seen too many bad jobs to ever buy someone elses mods. Half of them were put in by someone’s cousin, and the opportunity for mistakes are too great. Who knows what else they’ve tried to install , what harnesses they tapped into then removed, what bolts are torqued wrong, along with broken fasteners and missing screws etc. Anyone that has bought a few modded vehicles in their lifetime know what I mean.

Depends on the mods. If it's a mall crawler that was hardly off road I'd consider it. Especially if it's rocking Kings or some other suspension I'd really want. Pending it's not completely covered in mods, and if the price is right, why not?

I think the "modded" one would be just fine. It's not like it's a JDM Ricer-mobile, it's still a Tacoma and it's gonna treat you well.

I’ve modded every vehicle I’ve owned extensively (except the Model 3, which is only moderately modded). I try to do as much of the work myself as I can and I try to plan out my mods in advance so I’m not disassembling the same portion of the vehicle more than once. This ensures I know what was done and how to reverse it when the time comes to sell or trade. Even so, plastic clips and fasteners can and will break on you and some mods are ‘invasive’ and cannot be completely reversed even though no one would notice.

This being said, I would NEVER buy a used modded vehicle. Heck, I wouldn’t buy a new modded vehicle from the showroom floor. When I was shopping for my 2022 TRD OR 6MT I steered clear of the stealerships that only sold them with lifts and tire/wheel packages.

All that being said; to each their own. But buying someone else’s mods isn’t for me.

Dont cut the OE bumper if you plan to sell soon.
I think most buyers would prefer a stock front end over the giant, 175 lb Arb Summit Bar

Those install pretty easy I wouldn’t be concerned.

What I WOULD be concerned about is that it’s completely stock except….a full front bumper w/ hoops? Who does that? THAT is what piques my interest is WTF is that truck doing, so that’s my red flag - not the mod itself.

everyone around here does that because of deer, plus it looks pretty sweet. stock wheels, stock exhaust, stock everything except that...I see that more than fully modded/lifted trucks, seriously.

But yeah, consensus seems to agree

I added a SSO hidden winch bumper. I think with the clean look that no one will care either way. As long is it is done right.
