My Gibson Les Paul Studio is going out of tune a lot. I can tune up before I start a practice session, play a song (strumming, no crazy bends) and have to tune again right after. It's not going way out but enough to be noticable. I bought it new 2 months ago and they told me they provide free set ups when needed. I guess my question is would this be considered normal or does it need to be set up again ? I've been playing about an hour a day since I got it so I would think it should be broken in by now.

Have you either replaced the strings and/or stretched them yet? If I don't stretch them and make sure they are really seated on the tuning posts, I am always fighting tuning issues. Also, are you playing the guitar in a different room or in direct sunlight? Curious if humidity issues or warming/cooling of the wood is coming into play while you are playing.

I'm still playing the same strings it came with but I haven't stretched them. I always play in the same room (rec room of my finished basement) out of direct sunlight. I'm not sure if humidity is a factor.

I'd definitely recommend stretching them a few times to make sure everything is seated well and it should help quite a bit with tuning stability. Bunch of Youtube videos on how to take care of that.

Use some graphite, pencil lead in the nut on the neck, old Luther trick.
Cool picture I thought you folks might like. Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood getting a tour though the Gibson factory in the early 70’s. I work in the old factory for Heritage Guitar.

New strings can stretch and you usually have to tune a few times if they weren't stretched, but it doesn't sound like that's the issue. Is your tailpiece seated properly and are the anchors staying into the body? I just finished building a LP that I had to glue the anchors in because they were pulling out.

The guitar is still pretty new to me so I'm not sure if everything is working properly. I'm used to an Ibanez with a locking trem system so I wasn't sure if this is normal for the type of guitar. From the suggestions here, it doesn't sound like it is. I think I'm going to change the strings and check everything out and lube the nut. If that doesn't work, I'll take it back in to get them to set it up.

Thanks for the tips everybody !

I’ll preface this by saying I’m no expert. I’ve been playing since HS (25 yrs) on a hand-me-down Oscar Schmidt acoustic. I love that guitar - still have it - but I splurged in a big way this past July and picked up a new Gibson J45. Love it so far, although I am having trouble finding the right strings to do it justice.

Is it the sunburst kinda finish? Nice looking guitar. Have not played a Gibson acoustic.

Forgot to post this. All done. Testing the action before I glue in the nut on this picture. Sounds great. 50's wiring. Bourne pots.

Yes, sir - it’s the sunburst. I’d post a pic, but it looks just like the photos on the interwebz.

A guy at our local music store made a compelling case for nickel bronze strings, but they didn’t really do much for me. Back to phosphor bronze…

Any acoustic players on here ever try parabolic strings? Worth it or gimmick?
