Probably sound like a total noob here and well because I am. I just purchased an 05 Tacoma and I’ve noticed it rides a little rough suspension wise. Do I just need new shocks and struts or what would you guys recommend? TIA

If your truck isn’t lifted and you don’t plan on a lift. I would suggest 3rd gen Tacoma take off or Bilstein 4600.

This, including the rear leaves if they haven't already been swapped over to the 4 leaf pack. Would only recommend offroad or pro trim on the shocks though, the others are a bit harsh.

That doesn't mean that's all the issues you have, but a good place to start if everything else checks out.

We need a bit more information.
I’d your truck a single cab, Access Cab or Double Cab?
Is it an Off-Road or Sport?

    What engine?

What tires are on it now and what PSI are you running?

Double cab off road. BFG Mud Terrains 265/70/16. Not sure of air pressure I’ll have to check. No lift kit it’s all stock as far as I can tell

What little I seen when I searched showed they likely 10 ply.
I’d see what ply they are and what psi they are running.

I had a “complimentary” free inspection done with an oil change once.
On the way home every bump in the road jarred me to the bone.
Checked the pressure and it was @57 psi. And this was not a 10 ply tire either.

Put it back to 34 psi and the ride was back to normal.

What did you drive before? 4WD trucks are gonna ride rough/firm. I previously drove a Luv pickup and a Nissan Hardbody, both 2WD, and those rode smooth/soft compared to my 4WD Taco.

I find this surprising. My taco rides much smoother than almost every other car I've owned. The only smoother ride was a Lincoln Town Car.

Bilstein 5100s are good and you have the option of 4 height settings on the fronts from 0-2.5 inches but after the 1.75 setting you will have alignment issues and need new UCAs.
If you have big bucks there are a ton of posts on all the options so do a search. Second on tire pressure at 34-35 and watch for even wear.

Your mud terrain tires add to the truck riding like crap. They are as aggressive as they come. An all terrain tire would make the truck ride nicer.

If you don't know when the shocks were replaced and/or they look bad, then replace. I'd replace with 5100 or 4600 bilstein shocks. There are many choices for shocks, I'd skip the cheap ones including Monroe, kyb etc.

It’s because you have mud terrains and E rated tires. Your truck will ride a lot smoother on P rated tires. I had load E tires and they made my ride feel every bump on the road so I’m switching to load C. I feel like that’s a even ground of getting a smoother ride but being more durable than a P rated tire.

Little extra thing, do you have wheel spacers? If so, try taking them off. They make the ride pretty dang stiff.
I know people say it makes no difference, but I felt it with 2 separate cars.

Idk man. The 3rd gen TRD OR shocks ride quite well and smooth on my end. Also aren't the 4600 valved the same as the 5600 only that you can raise the height of the 5600.

    back to bone stock.
    I'm old school.

I still bounce up and down on a vehicles corner and watch the suspension movement after I jumped off. if it keeps moving for a few cycles, the shocks are bad. or if they are leaking.

I dont find bad shocks the typical culprit to a bad ride. tire pressure is the usual suspect.
