Right?!?! This is the first and only time I'll ever pay MSRP. I called a ton of dealerships looking for my truck and only ran into two of them who were marking up above MSRP. I laughed both of those guys off the phone. Also told both of them that I'd never buy a vehicle from them because of that.

I read an article a while ago that said a lot of manufacturers were warning dealerships not to mark them up because it could cause issues for them later with customers, as well as some stated if they were made aware of it, they might give that dealership less allocations.

While doing the paperwork for my truck, I asked the finance guy why dealerships were doing that and he said it was because a customer could buy a new vehicle at MSRP and then turn around and sell it above what they paid for it.

It’s what you’re willing to pay. Nice truck, I think I’d pay it right now today’s market. It’s what you’re looking for, right?

In Dec 2021 was allocated son’s new Tacoma, in late Feb 2022 took delivery at $500 below MSRP. Same dealer is now in late May getting $2500 to $4000 above MSRP on most Tacomas.

    Yep.
Yep. And THAT was @adamceckhardt ’s point. ;)
I’ve always payed less than MSRP and always will. If everyone held that philosophy like most used to, prices wouldn’t be where they are now.

Just got a quote for a (non existent) TRD Pro manual. MSRP was $47,800.
The dealer added a $599 doc fee, $125 tag and an Addendum of $2,294.
Total offer was $51,253 OTD (we cap at $500 sales tax).
    I countered at $48,800 OTD.

I used the spreadsheet someone provided on this thread and called over 20 dealers. Only one other had the truck I'm looking for, and they refused to sell it to me because I'm outside their PMA (Primary Marketing Area)

I would say about 3/4 of those trucks are not on the lot. With low invintory, dealers like to show what they have allocated to them. Some of those truck may not show up until the end of this year.

    -Need a truck
    -No trade in
-they have the exact truck you want
    -already put a deposit down
    -market conditions are against you

As someone who had a weekend to find a vehicle in a buyers market after an accident i felt like i was at an extreme disadvantage (9 dealerships in one day). You can settle for a different truck for possibly a lesser price or you can go with the truck you want. Your choice.

Well, if it were me, I'd keep calling dealers until I found one that isn't adding the markup.

They make a good bit of profit selling at MSRP, even in this market. I would never pay over MSRP.

Be glad it was just 2500. Tundras are being marked up 10 and 15K.

Wow. That's absurd. I called a dealer today and they said they had a TRD Pro with a 15k markup. Insane.

I know but unfortunately I called every dealer in the state (and in AZ, my home state) that had what I wanted, and it's either marked up everywhere, or already reserved.

And there are people who cannot afford to wait, because they need a vehicle, and essentially need to pay what the market demands. If you have a running vehicle, you can afford to wait. If you don't have a vehicle, and need one, you can't afford to wait, and pay what you have to pay...

Everyone's situation is different, but the choice made by a few may drive the market.

And then there's another cost I didn't even think of...

Let us say your car is no longer drivable. Are you to continue to pay insurance on this undriveable car while you attempt to get a replacement at or below MSRP? Continuing to pay insurance is a cost-factor. If I stop paying insurance, I risk losing any continuous coverage discount... If I continue to pay, I am throwing money away while I wait for that car at / below MSRP...

Facts , this will happen over the next 6 months …. Generally takes about a year for the markets to change and they’ve already slipped. Who’s buying trucks right now besides people who need them?

I commute everyday and last year all i saw was SUVs , just got home and i noticed car after car after car, and very little trucks/SUVs . It seems to be happening rather quickly.

Up in the northeast we are already seeing the crazy used tacoma prices drop. When gas is 5-6 dollars per gallon it really makes poeple rethink if they need a pickup. A big chunk of truck owners don't actually need a truck.

Spend 50k for a midsize truck that gets under 20mpg or buy a civic in the meantime for 20k new and get 35+ miles per gallon.

I hope to find a good deal on the 14-21 tundra when the market really drops hard.

I was in the market last winter. Locally: Hyundai wanted $1500 - $2500 additional. Ditto for the Toyota dealer. Volkswagen wasn’t charging anything additional but they are expensive to start. It was on the lot and no regrets.
