i just bought used and modded with the mods I happened to want, we negotiated a pretty fair base price and I paid a discounted premium on top of the vehicle price for the mods because they were mods I happened to want. With the internet car sales websites now and forums like tacoma world the chances of connecting a seller with a modded vehicle and a buyer that appreciates the mods are way higher than in the past. That being said if you like weird mods that are not well thought out your probably not gonna help your vehicles resale value and might actually hurt it.

Sold my 18 Tacoma for $2k more than I paid for it. Owned it 2 years. I had approx. $5k in mods that I lost. The guy that bought my used Tacoma was ecstatic that it had an SSO bumper, winch, sliders, lift kit etc.

There are private dealers that go out of their way to mod a truck, they wait for the person that wants to buy a ready to run overland truck.

One example is look at how many suckers fall for the "dealer installed lift kit." It's usually a spacer lift and some tires that rub for $10,000 markup.

90% of people would rather buy stock. There are plenty of folks that will buy a modded truck.

I'm not much into buying used, especially Tacoma' as they hold their value. I will not buy a modded vehicle unless as a trail beater and I could afford to use it as such, which I cannot. So new it is for my daily.

I wish I was in a position to buy new these days but I haven't bought a new Tacoma since 2005. And I got a new one in 98 too. That said being on my 18th Toyota 4x4 I have some experience in the selling of modded trucks. Don't do it. Anyone who thinks they can add the price of their modifications to what the truck is worth is seriously out of touch with reality. Go ahead and mod away. Many of us do it. Just expect to lose all that money and have a WAY WAY tougher time selling your truck. Keep those stock parts if you don't think it's your forever rig. You'll do better returning it to stock to sell.

This almost sounds exactly like the debate of having manual over automatic and its subsequent resale value.
