Getting timing-chain done, which is fine, already did fuel pump, shocks & struts, front & rear differentials, transmission serviced - needs new E brake cable housings, calipers, et. Al. Am I missing anything?

Any tips on the interior? Hope to keep for a while! I bought it at 28k, it never let me down.

Out of curiosity, did your fuel pump quit? From what I understand, they are considered "life of vehicle" item.
As for interior, did you mean interior of the car or engine? Seat covers if you don't already have them if you were talking interior of car.

Might as well do the water pump if you are that far into it.

Did you pay for any diag at the dealer or did they just read codes and say the chain was stretched?

    OK, stop.

Keep it simple, dont go cracking open the motor just cus the dealer told you so. There are oil filter screens (as well as accessible solenoids) that can get clogged that can be cleaned/replaced that control the vvti and can cause those codes. A full timing chain replacement is a very rare thing to need.

P0012 is almost always a stretched chain. Especially on a 4.0 Tacoma.

I've seen VVTI screens cause issues once in 10 years and it was caused by a previous issue internally.

Stuck VVTI controllers can cause the p0012, but usually there would be other codes.

The only true way to diagnose it is with an oscilloscope and correlate the crank to cams, but honestly I'd have no fear calling a chain with limited time.

P0012 first thing I do is check oil level, then active test the intake controllers (which eliminates the rare case of vvti filters). That's it. We have experience and know when to call them.

Question so I have same issue p0012 and replaced vvt actuator gear and vvt selenoid on my tacoma. Still getting a P0012. When I put 12v directly to the selenoid I can hear it click but no engine noise change at all. The only thing I have not done is the timing chain but would a stretched chain cause the vvt gear not to kick in if I put 12v directly to it.

While running? It uses oil pressure to trigger the phaser.

What about the VVT screens, did you check/change those?
