I need some bed stiffeners and am trying to find something that won't eat into bed space. The 4WP brackets that hide in the taillights would be perfect but they've been sold out for a minute.

I was afraid of cargo interference, but have had no issues.
Not an issue at all on 4x8 plywood sheets…
I went with Lil Bs for higher reach and tie down suitability up high.

these are also “stiffer” that some of the other common models…

I have the ones by Total Chaos. I worried about bed space at first but it has been a non-factor 2 years later. I use my bed quite a bit.

I'll echo what the other's have said, I never notice them, until I have to strap something down, then they're a godsend.

I don't think there's an alternative to 4WP, aside from some homemade jobs that I've seen.

Total chaos ones are great. I went to buy 4wp’s and they were sold out. Total chaos it was then. They don’t have too many raised edges so I can slide things right in, and my bed mat fits over the top. Very happy with them.

I agree that the Total Chaos ones are pretty low profile, but honestly that's a bit of a ding. Frankly they look like they wouldn't do much of anything. There's little in the way of diagonal rigidity there. The only thing preventing racking is a thin half circle of steel. I can't believe they're doing much.
