On the topic of fire wood allowance. We are not aware of the laws state side on wood and are camping for 3 weeks down the west coast and up through Nevada etc. Where fires are allowed but sounds like the type of wood you're using is an issue, we were thinking of making stops at Home Depot or Lowes at various locations along the way for scrap wood (warped wood no one wants for building like 2x2's etc.) they sell. Thoughts??

I don't know when you are planning to go, but I suspect fire bans of some sort will be in place pretty soon given how dry things have been.

Not sure if scrap 2x wood would be cheaper than firewood, but maybe. Firewood bundles tend to be overpriced. However, 2x4s and such make horrible firewood. In my experience it burns quickly and lots of sparks. I have used them in my Solo stove so if you are thinking super small fire like that maybe it would be a good option. While a lot of places prohibit collecting firewood, you can usually find enough down wood, stick and twigs to equal scrap lumber. For actual firewood, maybe someone selling by the cord for home heating would sell a smaller amount for a decent price - assuming you can haul all you would want.

Looks like there's a solo stove clone by a company called hotshot now.

I saw that today at Costco. Not a bad deal for what you get but it is a bit bigger than my Ranger and at this point I have what I need if I'm burning wood.

The Outland Living Firecube for those times when wood burning is prohibited. On the company website it is much cheaper than the current slamazon price.

I also came across the Lavabox. It is another great option but it is quite a bit more money.

Great review by the same guy with a comparison of them and he has a coupon code too!

I think the restriction you're referring to about the type of wood you can burn is probably the common requirement of burning wood that is local to the area. So no buying wood in one half of a state and driving it 4hrs to your campsite and burning it. As mentioned on the previous page, this is to prevent the spread of pests like the ash borer and/or diseases to areas where they aren't already present.

Personally I just buy firewood bundles. One spot I go to in WA has a house before the road I camp off of that sells bundles for $5. Everywhere else I usually stop off at a grocery store or gas station near my destination to pick up a bundle of two.

The last time I went to Moab I looked briefly for a bulk seller like phdog mentioned, but couldn't find one. Granted, I thought of it as I was on the road and only quickly searched while at a rest stop and then decided I didn't need the savings. If you were gonna stay somewhere for a while and needed more than a few bundles it might be more worth it.

This is perfect! Good size, square so it packs better, good price 153$ Canadian with shipping! Pumps out a lot of heat too it looks like. Thanks! Bought it.

Here at home if I don't have anything to burn (not common) I go buy scrap form Home Depot. Nice to "re-use" wood by buying the twisted crap they sell.. Cheap enough and easy to haul.
    Thanks for the info!

This design looks similar to others in that it uses a recycled 7.62mm ammo can. Pretty slick setup and I'm considering buying the small 5lb tank and carrier as a back up for my 20 lb tank. I like the rubberized feet so you can set it up on a boulder and not worry about the thing sliding down.

Any of you all have one, and if so - thoughts? Go or no-go?

Those are interesting but $80 more than the outland cube. If space is a big concern then maybe worth it. Not sure what other benefits there might be.

I wouldn't pay the REI price for that propane tank.

Same price as the company website. Is it cheaper somewhere else? Maybe next time there is a 20% off coupon.

    So I did a thing...
Could I have built this? Most likely but time is valuable and I don't have much right now. Great attention to detail on this product and I'm happy to support a small American business. They have a sense of humor too. Looking forward to trying this out asap.

I forgot the dual function of the stand/grill. I'd seen a different video about it but this one shows it well...

I have the solo Bonfire as well, gets used on the patio as much as the trail. Is it an over priced tin can? Maybe, but I would buy one again.

Have you tried this yet? Did you get lava rocks or the mini ceramic logs? Curious how it's working.

I didn't buy it. A bit pricey for me. Right now, I really don't feel the need for a fire (or fire can) when out camping. That may seem odd, but I just don't care. At least not yet whilst solo camping. This thread was fresh in my mind when I saw the gear so I thought I'd post. Cannot speak to performance and experience since I didn't buy it.

So I picked up the Ignik can on sale at REI. I guess we'll see if it's worth it or not.

Does anyone know if you could grill over this? I'll put some lava rocks in so those might get some drippings but it will probably burn off or just replace them after a while. It would need some sort of grate that would be stable. There is a stand/grate for the lavabox but seems larger than necessary since the Ignik has a stand already, but something like that would be ideal.

First test. Kinda blue but probably to be expected. Maybe have too many lava rocks, or not enough. Will have to experiment. I also got a stainless grate and going to try cooking, with a smaller flame of course.

As a prior scout master I can tell you that the best wood fire pit is the washtub out of a stainless steel washing machine. The holes draw in more air and create a secondary burn. Put it up off the ground with cider blocks, rocks, or a cut in half 55gal drum. That washtub will glow red and heat anyone around the fire. My kids call it my redneck fire pit but always love the heat it puts out.
