Oil change disaster advice needed

I get it believe me. I’m just interested in the details and scenarios.

 

There’s no way to have any signs otherwise. That’s the problem. The stupid “run some oil through it and look for chunks” is a joke. I see a lot of wiped bearings in my drag car and there’s usually nothing visual in the oil that will tell you that.

 

I would think an oil pressure test coupled with an oil analysis might show something.

 

My guess if this vehicle goes to auction, its going to have a reserve on it. I once bought a motorcycle back in the late 70's that became hard to obtain at dealers through acquaintance at a albany, ny auction the same way.

 

1.) The Jeep dealer I bought my Taco from had plenty of cars on site, and then some.
2.) The salesperson was busy. There were plenty of fish. The fish weren't biting at an Inferno Taco.
3.) Again, this was a Jeep dealer...

 

We are talking about a TOYOTA dealer, not a jeep dealer. You keep singing the wrong song. Turn the page.

 

Problem is we don't even know for sure how low or how long the op's tacoma was on oil. Sure the warning lights probably came on that would make anyone paranoid, and imagine the worse wanting a new truck. Maybe it wasn't as bad as the op claims, but the dealer is now stuck with a truck they just want to wash their hands with.

 

This is especially true on the last piece. Yes today's climate is wild but it still is not out of the question.

Different situation but..10 years ago I traded a Chevy pickup on my Tacoma. 5 years old 75K miles and impeccable condition. They ended up auctioning it and told me that was the plan all along anyway. They primarily sell new and the handful of used ones were all Toyota so my Chevy wasn't a good fit.

At that point (timewise) it probably almost makes more sense to just replace the damn things anyways.

Very easy to check for damage. Pull the oil filter and inspect the pleats with a magnet.
We do that on every oil change on airplanes. No fine metal particles or chunks you are good to go.
I have found fine metal particles that cover the end of a magnet on apparent healthy running engines.

 

not entirely true..

loss to Toyota/the dealership for a potential buy back, the need to recuperate the loss of the buy back. Labor for a motor tear-down, plus, parts cost for a short/long block motor and one time use items such as gaskets, nuts/bolts etc,etc. for the repair, labor to assemble back. And right now, the most qualifying factor....parts availability. Add those up and good chance that that 7k tacoma will go to auction.



My dealership and and our sister dealership which is Toyota together recently leased a large vacant lot that is being converted for storage just for our service depts. overflow. My dept. alone which is the Heavy Line Dept. is backed up to about a month and a half wait before we'll work on your junk..

The fact that they gave you a loaner right away instead of telling you to go furself means they trying to sweep it under the rug because they owe you a new truck at this point. 7k miles is brand new, theres nothing they can fix thats going to make your truck brand new except for replacing it.

 

Its a long thread, but if you follow through the OP is trading that truck in towards the purchase of a new one.

 

Another way that is much more conclusive is to remove the valve cover, to access the bearing caps to the cam(s). Remove each cap to inspect the bearing surface looking for scoring of the surface.

This would be considered "scored". This is from a 6.2L Ford Motor that was remanufactured by Jasper. Scoring happened at 10k miles after I did the swap.



Another way is to remove the VVT solenoids to check debris/foreign material..

 

Do you mind if I ask what happened to the Jasper 6.2? I thought Jasper was high quality and stands behind their product. Just curious..

 

Agreed. I was suggesting that the dealer, who's indicated it is good to go, won't be tearing anything down and will simply sell it as is- which is GREAT in their eyes.

 

Jasper re-man motors have been hit or miss going on the last few years. On this particular motor I believe the bearing sleeves that Jasper used were either out of spec and/or poorly machined. According to the parts dept a new replacement was approved and sent without any hassles. A wrong version of the block was sent and was not compatible with the current motor mounts. A pre 2017 motor was sent. This is where Jasper got screwy, it was recommended by them that we, or a machine shop make the modifications to the block for the motor mounts to work. I'm not drilling and tapping new threads into the side of the block. Eventually the correct motor was sent. Unfortunately it took 6 weeks for it to show up, total down time for the customer was 11 weeks.

I do hear from the transmission dept. that they never have any issues with the re-man transmission from Jasper.

 

Forgive my ignorance, but what are we looking at here? How'd it happen?

 

That is part of the connecting rod to piston #6. Not entirely sure yet of the root cause on this motor. Usually with this motor a fuel injector with be stuck open flooding the combustion chamber with fuel, resulting in a hydrolock condition. Im not able to perform any injector flow tests until its all running again.
