    Hey Everyone,

    I am a new Tacoma owner. I have a 2021 Sr 2.7l 4x2.

I have a bilstien leveling kit, Eibach Springs and add a leaf packs.

    running 265/70/17 Ridge Grapplers.

To my best understanding my truck came stock with a gear ratio
Of 4.30 per the Toyota specs for my model. I bought it brand new and am the original owner.

For what I am running, should I gear up? It is a daily driver and I am not off-road with it.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you live in an area with hills, new gears would be very beneficial to have. If you're in a flat area, like myself, then they won't be as necessary but couldn't hurt. Because you have the 2.7L, it may make sense to get gears, regardless of where you live. You'd have to get input from others on here who also drive a 2.7, as I cannot speak on that.

Getting gears will hurt your MPG's, but will increase the drivability, which makes it worth it in my opinion.

Agree with ktbell. perhaps ask other 4cyl members.

But what you are running isn't that far off OEM, so I would say no, you probably don't need a re-gear

I guess it depends on what you want out of your vehicle.

I personally wouldn’t re-gear a SR 4x2 2.7l, feels like a waste to spend that much on a super base model Tacoma

Welcome to TW and I agree with the other comments that I cannot see changing gears being worth it for a truck that is going to live on the pavement. Enjoy.

Welcome to tw. Getting back to gearing its sort of a crap shoot. You can improve the performance around town, but you'll get less fuel economy on the highway. Imo, cost vs reward really not worth it in my opinion unless some towing, or carrying heavy loads are involved.

I think they are close to having a tune for the 2.7. I would wait and get the tune as soon as it is available. It will help with gas mileage on a daily driver. Follow @PapaRee and the KDMax Pro tune topic for when a tune will be available.

You should be fine with your gear, the 4.30 is no slouch and the 2.7L is stronger off the start in 1st gear than a V6 automatic which has a wimpy 3.91.
FYI, I’ve been on rough gamelands roads with mine and once took an F150 2WD on a 8000+ mile around the US and Canada often on goat trail rocky roads some would call “off roading” but I call traveling and camping the continent. Just have to know your limits and how to pick your line.

You guys seem to be way more helpful. I used to be a Jeep owner for years before this Tacoma. The threads on those things are crazy.

I just wanted to make sure that I take the best care of this vehicle as I can. Grateful to even have a vehicle let alone to have extra cash for “extras”. Just wanted to make sure I was setting it up correctly.

I have a 2011 base 2.7, 5 speed Tacoma which came stock with 3.31 gears. Got bigger tires-31.5/15 and re geared TO 4.30. Cost a fortune, added Trutrac while i was busting the bank.
Huge difference. No desire to go above 4.30.
